As a result the NCAA is going to ban every university in California that pays it's athletes.
Creates an UNFAIR recruiting advantage....
Hahahahahahhahahahahahaahahaha
ALL California schools BANNED from the NCAA!
Good job, dumbocunts!
everything they touch turns to SHIT!

The SEC is starting to panic. Now kids don't have to spend 4 years in a swamp to get paid.
Why you hate capitalism, free markets, and property rights ?
This is actually the rare instance where the CA government is doing something right.

Re: California Gov Signs pay for play bill...
I am against this. There are very few athletes that will actually have their image used commercially in such large ads that it will garner any real money.
Will these athletes be allowed to pose in their school uniforms? What is the value of the school uniform vs the players face? Does the player have any marketability outside of his team’s uniform?
Further this is an NCAA violation waiting to happen. Some guy owns his own company and decides to put up billboards all over California with each member of the USC football team on them. The players are then due a fee for the use of their likeness. No issues with this model at all.
Then there is the Title IX issue. Men’s football and basketball players might get some coin. But what do they get paid when women’s swimming and field hockey get nothing? That won’t survive a Title IX lawsuit.
I do see other states waiting to see how this plays out before the 2023 implementation. If it somehow works out other states will quickly follow. But I think the NCAA removes CA schools from post season consideration. If that happens it will kill athletic programs at most CA colleges.

I am for this, and was surprisingly, about to rack Gavin.
Then some good points were made. The NCAA will never stand for this and tell him to fuck the fuck off.
I would like to see the NCAA get onboard and implement this nationwide.
I would actually go further and allow them to be paid. These kids sacrifice their bodies for a free education.
The large majority will never see a down in the NFL. And a substantial number will not receive an education worth a damn.

Screwy might be right but what we will then have is 50 programs that pay players. These schools will compete among themselves. The remaining programs will go to an FCS style model. The NCAA will not oversee the 50 schools but will continue with all the others.

You can't have one State paying college athletes and the other 49 not paying college athletes.....that would create an UNFAIR recruiting advantage to California schools.
This is going to EXPLODE because the NCAA will have to ban California schools from the NCAA....no doubt a few other libtard States will join Califagia and now it's going all the way to the Supreme Court.
Everything is getting BLOWN UP because of libtards....
Libtards are a cancer and they need a heavy dose of Chemo to destroy them!
Re: California Gov Signs pay for play bill...
Wouldn't it just be easier for the colleges to simply not allow sales of names or numbers on the school's gear ??
My brother had a "full boat" to Penn State for football back in the early 1960's. He was "paid" tuition, room and board, books, and $15 a month for "laundry". Not sure what it is today, but making a little raise in the "laundry" should help anyone playing whether they were stars or not.

Yes Greed. Players like myself who couldn’t afford school without crushing debt have an opportunity for a free education. Don’t lose site of the fact most college athletes aren’t going pro. The education is extremely valuable even if they don’t see it that way. Don’t want the free education, don’t take the scholarship.

You are smarter than this Mikey. Players are already receiving compensation in the form of free tuition and room and board for starters. Then they get a ton of other free things. If they don’t like the compensation schedule or terms they are under no obligation to accept the scholarship.

About 7 or 8 years I ago I had numerous protracted flame wars in the College Football Forum here with many multiple 'tards who just couldn't stomach my OBVIOUS take that D-I college football and basketball are ridiculous farces.
The obvious reason (that 'tards could not accept) was (and is) that when you tune in to a game on Saturday afternoon you have no idea which players are being paid under the table, and which schools are cheating for players, academically, etc.
A reasonable person knows that such things are occurring, and maybe in widespread fashion, but can't exactly identify it.
It is all murky.
You don't know for sure which schools are cheating the best, most discretely, most overwhelmingly...
So just know (or you SHOULD know, if you don't choose to be a blatant moron, that the whole thing is a sham.
The competitive landscape is askew, but it so askew that you are not even able to identify exactly how askew it is.
And Mr. Dumbshit fan tunes in, waves his school colors around, and acts like it is legitimate competition.
rotf...
It is a competitive farce, you fucking idiots.

Where. To. Even. Begin.
OK, I'll start with the people (note, "people" is plural) with the "CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS ARE GOING TO PAY PLAYERS!!!!"
Uhm... are you capable of reading at a third-grade level? Since that topic didn't come up in this subject. Merely marketing their name and likeness -- so, anyone can pay them except the schools. Ignorant tools.
Next...
So, Lefty, care to outline Ed O'Bannon's "greed" for us? Like, how much did he pocket from his suit?
Nevermind, I'll save you the trouble -- he finished in the hole, and didn't make a dime. Poorly executed "greed," wouldn't you say?
He had an issue with someone using his likeness for profit... wait for it... after he left school.
Now that I'm done addressing the rampant retardation here (and Softhead is too retarded to even address), to the subject at hand...
The laws of Unintended Consequences are at play. I think we've all been around here long enough to know which school I root for. (look Up and Left)
Hello?
Yeah, let's make this a federal law. Works for me.
I hope Bama enjoyed all those top 5 star recruits they used to get. Same with Georgia, Clemson, tOSU, et al. Have fun picking through Oregon's rejects to field a team. If players can sign endorsement deals, recruiting will become a very one-sided affair. And HINT... it favors my team, by a fucking mile. If California wanted to export its high school talent even more than it does now, they found the solution.
Unintended consequences.
Just Do It

If we would simply end the charade of the pure amateur athlete and treat this as a business with employees, everything would improve.
Treat BTPCF essentially like the NFL farm system that it is.
The only strict rules I would put in place is you can't bounce back and forth like you can in the baseball farm system. I think they should also keep some sort of age limitations in effect.
There also should be a team cap on total compensation as there is in the NFL.
Such a system would still have traditional scholarship system for big fat kids....errrrrrr I mean non-blue chip players.
Such a system would be subject to normal contractual obligation. Colleges could tell a kid, we are paying you X, for Y years. During that time the kid would not be able to go pro or transfer without being released by the school.
Such a system would keep more kids around for 4 years. Basketball needs this way more than football, but it is the same concept.
Free market capitalism has made us prosperous enough to be able to waste billions on things as trivial as a bunch of big kids smashing into one another. Shouldn't those kids have that same system at their disposal. College sports is essentially a form of slavery, or at least indentured servitude.

From NYTimes:
What will the law do ?
The law will allow student-athletes throughout California to be compensated for the use of their name, image or likeness, and it will also allow them to hire agents. Unless modified (more on that later), it is scheduled to take effect in 2023.
The schools will pay nothing. Licensees only will pay.

Re: California Gov Signs pay for play bill...
I understand the suit Dins. I also understand how the NLI and associated financial aid agreements work. For those that don't the NLI is not valid without an associated financial aid agreement for 1 academic school year. The NLI is standard across all schools. The financial aid agreement is what is unique to most schools. These financial aid agreements are what lay out the use of likeness in most cases. My agreement said the school would retain the rights to all of my images and likeness while representing the school and those same images and likenesses could be used once I was out of school.Dinsdale wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 5:00 am

Ed signed something similar. He was allowed a free education and agreed to these same terms. Then when he was out of school he wanted to change the terms of the agreement that he signed. That is greed. Further Ed's suit only covered football and men's basketball. Why?

Uh, no. It is hardly a farm system. 256 players are drafted every year. Another 100 or so are signed as free agents after the draft. Approx 200 make a roster of some sort. Further Bama had 10 player drafted last year, which is one of the higher numbers for any school. How exactly does that make it a farm system. So 200 of 12,000 players or .016% make it to the league and it is now a farm system? No way.smackaholic wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 1:26 pm

This is hilarious especially coming directly after Dins post and his not so thinly veiled Oregon references. Maybe I should have asked Phil about this a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday morning when he walked into the FBO at Redmond where I was checking out the rental plane, and he came in to greet his passengers that were getting on his G5 that was all painted in green and yellow. Mixture of wealthy looking people, some middle age and a several younger ones, re college age recruit types. On their way to the Nevada game. In style and luxury. Back home sleeping in their own beds that night too. It is a business, no doubt about that.smackaholic wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 1:26 pm

Exactly. And no one is 1099ing those athletes either. I have a once removed inlaw that was offered a full ride to Pacific University on a football scholarship. Pacific is a low level D3 school that is not competitive at all. But it does cost about 100K a year to go to school there. This idiot was sitting the pine a lot his first year, and went back for his second year and was sitting the pine at the start and he fucking quit the school because he was not getting playing time. Walked away from 400k worth of schooling. He is working in the woods now for his uncle making maybe 45 a year, drinking every day in the crummy on the way home and banging fat farm chicks. Way to go moron.Left Seater wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 7:52 pm

Re: California Gov Signs pay for play bill...
Correct. But all of those players were in their school uniforms. What is their likeness worth if they are not in their school uniform? Do they have any value if they aren't in their school's uniform? Further, how much of the player's value is because his school flew him and his teammates across country to play in a tournament? Would the player have the same value if he didn't have the coaching, gym facilities, training facilities, nutrition staff or medical staff?
In another example take Kyle Phillips of UCLA. He was recently named one of the Pac-12 players of the week. I am sure there would be a UCLA alum that would pay the kid to come out and sign autographs for customers of the alums business. But would an alum of Oregon or Colorado hire Kyle Phillips to come sign autographs for customers of their business? I would argue no. Therefore Kyle's value is completely tied to his school and not to his ability.

a lot of lawsuits over this bill going all the way to the supreme court.

Uhm... in a word...
No.
No scholarships in D3.
But I know a guy who played on Linfield's last national championship team. Hometown boy from McMinneville. While D3 schools don't have scholarships -- they just straight-up pay them. Dude got a "special skills grant," which paid for all of his tuition and books. He also got grants to pay for food and housing... while living with his folks right up the street. Said he wanted for very little in his time there.

Re: California Gov Signs pay for play bill...
Grants, scholarships, whatever the kid walked away from a 4 year paid college education. I believe Pacific University has had football back for about 6 years now. I was one of the sub contractors who did some of the initial site work on the new synthetic football field and then rebuilt the baseball and softball fields a few years later after the architects, original contractor and AD fucked it all up.Dinsdale wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 10:30 pmI was talking about Linfield football.schmick wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 9:02 pm

Pacific is a D3 school, that recent started football back up. You're confusing Pacific University with University of the Pacific.Pacific is a D1 school but I don't believe they have football any longer. My neighbors grand daughter has a full ride to Pacific for Softball

What the world and this board really needs is a time machine so that somebody could go back in time and stick a coat hanger up your mothers filthy vile bleeding cunt and coat hanger your miserable head and drop it out on the floor and stomp on it. You are the worst ankle biting piece of shit with your playground insults this board has ever seen, even surpassing Pickkle.

Well...technically, if her cunt was bleeding she wouldn't have been in a reproductive cycle to have Baby Sale...
