Re: Canadian posters
They should have been.
Part of the problem was the whole "Beatles" mythology thing. As well, they didn't get much publicity or airplay after that first album. "Hope" and "Sir Army Suit" were solid efforts with some great singles from "Suit". "Hope" was more of a concept album...sort of. "Magenta Lane" is also a nice disc too. Too bad they didn't get more pub.

Refusing to put band members names on LP's is somewhat limiting. Refusing to perform in support of your records is.. different. Ripping off the Beatles doesn't make you the Beatles.

They didn't rip-off the Beatles. They were certainly influenced by them, but they didn't create or start those rumors. To be fair, they didn't deny them either, not right away. Eventually, they did perform live. They just started as a studio band. I agree that they chose, for whatever reason, to remain anonymous for a long time, and that didn't help.

The truth is that you don't know jack-fucking-shit about music. It's okay if you don't like the Beatles, though God and god knows why, but you need to respect their history and influence on music. Even as solo artists, they packed more punch than 95% of today's so-called artists.Screw_Michigan wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2019 3:34 amHow fucking old are you? I'm old enough to have cut my teeth listening to the then newly-released Beatles Red Album 1962-66. When I was a child I remember listening to Beatles records on the radio. And in first grade I remember a girl in my class announcing that she had heard that the Beatles broke up.Screw_Michigan wrote:How fucking old are you? I'm not dismissing the fact that the Beatles were one of the most talented and influential musicians of the rock era. I'm just saying life is too short to be going on and on about how much you love the Beatles. There is too much amazing music being written, recorded and performed in 2019 to make me give one half a shit about the fucking Beatles.
I pity those who can't move on from the Beatles. Grow up already.

I don't think that anyone is "hung up" on the Beatles still. It's more a matter of perspective and appreciation. Hell, I can't tell you when the last time I listened to one of their albums was. I love a lot of today's music. But I always appreciate what came before, which artists paved the pathway towards today's modern music. This thread isn't and wasn't even about the Beatles, except in how they influenced Klaatu.
Grow up and away from the Beatles though. Never.

Good music is timeless. You can re-listen to the same piece of music and appreciate it on a different contextual level.
Revolver doesn't mean the same thing to me today as it did when I was 17...but it hits me just the same.

Perfectly said Marty. That is the beautiful thing about great music. "Revolver" is probably my favorite Beatles record, as well as "Abby Road". But both have struck me differently at different times. Depends on mood, place and circumstance.Shlomart Ben Yisrael wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2019 9:21 pmTrust me, I feel like putting my fist throughScrew_Michigan wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2019 7:45 pm

The Beatles? I get more of an ELO or even a Bowie vibe from these guys. Granted, I haven't listened to all of their stuff.

Sometimes I listen for different sounds.
I can listen to Revolver and enjoy Paul's lyrics and guitar work (he plays the solo on Taxman)...other times I can dig Ringo's simple yet vital drum fills...

I don’t get arguing about music. It is like alcohol. Listen to what you like and why try to make others think what you like is the best?
The first three saved stations on XM in my suburban are 80s, Country, and Hair Nation. Don’t like it? Cool. I don’t give a rats ass.

As for music and its timing, am I not allowed to listen to Beethoven anymore?

The stereo versions of Sgt. Peppers and Pipers At The Gates both suck. This is the era of stereo recordings still being a novelty and engineers not knowing how to mix and record with a technology still in it's infancy.
The mono masters are phenomenal.

The 2009 Mono Remasters of the Beatles albums are absolutely the last word in excellent recordings, captured as they were intended to be.

Re: Canadian posters
Screw's iconoclastic hatred of the Beatles aside, Revolver probably marked the exact moment the Beatles turned into hippies and Rock and Roll lost whatever was left of it's dignity forever. Aside from that, Interstellar Overdrive is horrific in any format. The first 48 seconds were good, then apparently George Martin took over the song. You can actually hear the whoopie-cushion at 3:47.
