Her goal is not to educate children, but to provide a place to park children. The extended hours would be mandatory, and used for all the programs cut throughout the decades as 'non-essential' -- ie, music and arts. Teachers would not be required to work additional hours, but would be allowed to sign up.

It is not possible to create a mandatory extension of the school day, then tell teachers their participation is voluntary -- not in the schools this program is intended for.

Frankly, she should go all of the way with this and propose Alaska Native style boarding schools. Unlike the pre-70s version, Native Alaskans today kill to put their students in state boarding schools. The children get the discipline, meals, beds and structure in a regimented environment they would not get at home, and the schools have a good prep rep.

So that's the real next step. Boarding schools, with Native Alaskan amounts of money behind it, I would vote for.

Working parents (read: single mothers) do not have the support network of working husbands or stay-at-home female relatives of the past. They don't have the au pair money of the wealthy. Keeping the children in school for longer amounts of time also ensures they're not in the streets. Of course, now this means bussed students might as well sleep at school, unless bussing is different from 30 years ago. I remember being bussed. Just because school let out at 315pm didn't mean I was getting home by 4pm. It just meant waiting for the buses which dropped off the white kids first to come back to pick us up, then go through the additional travel time. Two hours of being at school for no reason except waiting, sucked. Being prioritized last sucked. Not having any value unless playing a sport sucked. Those were the schools with buses. There was also the public transportation method, which was not free.
