Ordered to do what? He left all of his secured items behind (weapons, NVG, SIGINT items etc) and toddled off with a knife, a map and a compass. He wasn't some highly trained Delta Force trooper. He was a slapnuts PFC who washed out of Coast Guard training and ended up in the Army.

Occam's razor says that he wasn't wrapped very tight to begin with and, when you subject somebody like that to the enormous psychological pressure of sustained combat operations in an isolated outpost, who that hell knows what's rattling around in his noodle?

As far as safety is concerned, everything I've read indicated that he wasn't feeling very fucking safe. He thought the guys in his unit were total fuck ups who were going to get everybody killed. The fact that was able to leave the perimeter in the middle of the night suggests to me that there might be something to his complaint. He was known to have attempted to cultivate friendly relations with the local village. Maybe he had a piece on the side? Maybe it was a honeypot trap? Maybe he liked his odds better outside the perimeter than inside it in the event that the shit hit the fan.

In any event, he had some kind plan however garbled and idiotic it might have been. In leaving behind his secured items, he took a deliberate step to minimize his legal jeopardy should he be arrested by US forces. You can certainly make a better case for his execution than his pardon. Desertion in combat operations is one of the most serious crimes against the good order and discipline of the force and death is an available sentencing option.
