Self check out machines...
Good or bad?
My grocery store has recently put about 10 of these self check out terminals in the check out area. I tend to use them when I don’t have many items. I also use them at big box stores like Home Depot.
Another addition at our local supermarket is the scanning gun that you take with you while you shop and you scan the items as you add them to your basket. When you are ready to leave you hit a button and it totals your purchases and charges your card on file. You get to avoid the check out area completely. So far this is on an invite only basis for heavy users and people who have signed up for one of the chains discount cards.
Now it seems certain cities and states are moving to limit these technologies. Portland is apparently one of these places. Recent changes to the law raised minimum wages. Grocery stores then moved to install more self check out kiosks. Since this cost union employees hours or jobs the unions are fighting back. They have no succeeded in getting a ballot measure in place for voting in 2020. This would limit the number of self check out machines to no more than 2 per store. I am sure Dins can shed light on the exact measure.
This seems idiotic. Why not let customers choose? If they want to wait in line behind the oldies writing a check for groceries and interact with a human great, let them. But if they want to self check out they should also have that option.
So what say you? Self check out and kill union jobs or ban self check out kiosks?

Re: Self check out machines...
In Portland (which I live about 2 miles outside the city limits of, thank God and GOD), I think one union whiner brought this up.
At this point, it's not really a thing. And among all but the most diehard leftists, unions are looking bad right now. The ILWU drove the container shippers out of town (over 2 jobs... 2)*, which immediately made the gridlock worse (almost overnight). And the fast food workers decided they could shut down local businesses. Unenployment is low here, and most places offer more than minimum wage ($12.50) anyway. I'm guessing the only places that pay that are food service that also have tips. I see entry level stuff (like gas stations) with signs for starting wages in the $14+ range (don't get any ideas, Screwey).
* - The ILWU got sued for $93 million over it, and they're going bankrupt. A new company is going to resume shipping operations at Terminal 6 (since it's by far the easiest port in the country to smuggle drugs into, and certain international entities weren't going to let it die). We'll see how the ILWU comes into play.

Saw a picture on Twitter of a container ship headed down the Columbia out by Sauvies Island, headed for Terminal 6. Wonder how much Chinese fentenal (sp, I know fuckers) was squirreled in those boxes.

So you don’t mind waiting in a line to then be behind someone’s grandmother who waits for the total to be announced before she starts filling out her check?

In the self-checkout?
That'll age you ten years.
Re: Self check out machines...
The grocery store that I shop at (locally owned) doesn’t have any self checkout. But, unlike most of the major chains, they have very efficient checkers and will rarely let any line get longer than two customers before opening another register.Left Seater wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2019 1:39 pm So you don’t mind waiting in a line to then be behind someone’s grandmother who waits for the total to be announced before she starts filling out her check?
That being said, I’ll usually go with whatever option seems fastest. I almost always use the self checkout at Home Depot and, in the rare occasion when I’m forced go there, at Walmart. The Walmarts, at least around here, seem to have large, well managed self-check areas with a dozen or more registers. Plus their human checkers always seem to be glacially slow.
Other chains, like Target also seem to have very slow checkers. Costco, on the other hand, is super efficient. Haven’t seen any self checkout there but I think if they did it would probably fuck up their entire system.
That scanning gun seems like a good idea. Haven’t seen any of those around here. Of course you have to have a significant nucleus of customers intelligent enough to figure out how to use them to make that a worthwhile option.
Sorry, I just don’t see this as a political issue.

Mikey,
I don’t see this as a political issue. In fact it would seem to be more generational. The younger someone is the more likely they are to use the self serve machines.
But apparently this is a political thing in the U&L. Why else would this be on the ballot?

I mean I don’t mind them in theory. It is just when they show up and bitch about Cali, but then go to the ballot box and pull the D lever, that they become rejects.
You left Cali for a reason. If you vote team D, the next place will eventually become Cali and you will just have to leave again.

Reincarnation is tricky. Someone on a different board said, 'We,ve all had those dreams,' as five year olds or younger, the details of places we should never have had knowledge of, let alone intimate knowledge of.EAP wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2019 11:46 pmOh, so you're on the same page of reincarnation like shirley Maclaine?Innocent Bystander wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2019 11:34 pmRelax, bro. Re: Self check out machines...
No, it's not. It's just another afterlife fantasy. You ever notice how morons who believe in reincarnation never claim to be a reincarnated leper or some other such dreg of society? They're always some kind of high priest or nobility. Never some poor shitbag who got kicked in the head by a goat at age two. Also, where are all these new souls coming from? There are more people alive right now this very second than have existed in all of human history combined.
It's very dumb idea for vain and frightened people.

Reincarnation is tricky because reality doesn't always mesh with our limited understanding of the cosmos.

If you truly believe that liberty is sacrosanct, then you agree the government has no right to force a business owner to employ people over machines or vice versa.
In the same breath, once the business owner makes that decision, the government also has no right to force a customer of said business to stand in one line or the other.
Let the foot traffic decide. If that ultimately means that there should be no humans at the checkout register, then their labor shall be more valuable elsewhere in the market.
With that said, I do not like the self checkout machines as the scanners are not efficient. I’d rather go to the line with a person doing that job.

The government is the people. The union wants the people to decide that there is more benefit in saving union jobs than saving merchant's profits. They met the requirements to put it up to an official vote. That's the system.
The people will vote via their long-term behavior, regardless.

Your last post is complete and utter bullshit.
Are you having trouble with that logic?
There is no answer, scientific or otherwise, to the great unknowns.
So when you explain things that aren't known? You come across as clownish.
Notice how I used the word faith.
When there's a great unknown,
It's all faith at that point until proven otherwise.
So whether you like it or not, your ass is firmly planted in that boat of faith.
Funny how this seems to be light years over your head.

Let me explain in layman's terms,
Since you seem to have trouble with logic.
In order to be in your camp of thinking that there is no God,
You must follow the thinking that
"Something came from nothing".
Which is in and of itself, impossible.
The big bang theory?
An explosion that started our universe?
That something would've come from nothing, so to speak.
See you have a huge disconnect from reality.
Until science explains something through experimentation, it's not a proven fact.
So your posts don't refute my posts.
Here's where you stepped in your own shit.
The unexplained origins of all things.
That's the fly in your ointment.
The big elephant in the room.
And your Achilles heel.
You are AFRAID of what you don't know or understand.
I'm not.
You act like we are afraid, but in reality? You're a frightened little dove in a cage of burmese pythons.
It's a classic deceptive technique you use.
But against a superior IQ such as mine, you are hitting a brick wall in a Maserati goin' 225.
