It is a pretty good list.
Of course this is very subjective.
However, is it possible for you to nail down ONE Elvis tune?

Of course this is very subjective.
However, is it possible for you to nail down ONE Elvis tune?
And let me fully explain why.
Artists with soul depth and diversity, weave magic in a majority of their interpretations.
So you will find masterpieces in hidden gems never even known about.
Frank Sinatra, ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, etc.....made the words of another, timeless.
Took the song in a new direction altogether.
Those early records at sun studios in Memphis are revelatory.
The songwriter who wrote "fly me to the moon", could never have imagined the genius of Sinatra.
The songwriter of "love for sale"
NEVER could've done what the great Ella Fitzgerald did with those lyrics.
I defy anyone to not be blown away by ella Fitzgerald's interpretation of "Love for sale".
Sure Glen Campbell covered John Hartford's "gentle on my mind", but glen's genius was his finger picking.
When elvis gotta hold of those lyrics, it was like a kafkaesque painting. Elvis literally transports the listener to a train yard in a cold biting rain, sippin' scalding hot soup from a rusty tin can, yearning for his lover.
That's an icon.
Dylan's "tomorrow is a long time"
Is pure magic in elvis's soul.
Simon& Garfunkel's "bridge over troubled water" takes on a powerful new gospel feeling in elvis's live stage rendition.
August 11, 1970.
Find it on YouTube.
Johnny cash owns trent Reznor's "hurt" for all eternity.
Willie's cover of johnny Christopher's "always on my mind" is ok.
But elvis's interpretation is pure sublime.
Those rick n roll classics from the 1950's,
Where do you begin???
Each one is a perfect masterpiece.
Just spend a lazy day on YouTube with a pair of $500 headphones, and lose yourself in pure rock n roll perfection.
Start at sun records, then the RCA records from 56 thru 60.
Each one a timeless piece of art.
Scotty Moore's guitar,
Everything came together to produce rock n roll Nirvana.
His gospel recordings are critically acclaimed perfection.
These studio recordings stand the test of time, because of the sheer soul depth and diversity.
One more thing. The songwriter who wrote "America the beautiful", NEVER could've taken his own words to the level that Ray Charles did.
So, no. I can't honestly give you just one song.

Sinatra and Ray Charles were great at the lyrics. You could actually understand every word.

Great at lyrics? What are you?
A middle schooler?
I brought up Sinatra, ella Fitzgerald, Ray and Elvis as supreme examples of artists with the soul depth and sheer artistry to take a lyric to a higher level. A level that the songwriter didn't know existed.
Imagine a select few artists in history to have that ability.
Then you'll understand why they are so iconic.

Look for my choice for Elvis' sig song -----> in a few days.
But give a listen to his interpretation of Dylan's "tomorrow is a long time"
"Such a night".
Any of the 50's rock n roll classics. His fuckin' voice in the studio is so iconic and otherworldly, that it defies logic.
Then the falsetto in the early 60's gospel sessions, pure sublime.
Then the grit and earthy soul of the 69' sessions at American in memphis.
"Gentle on my mind".
"If I can dream", from 68'.
Right around the time of the assassinations of MLK and RFK.
an ICONIC performance.
Fuck. This guy's voice was chameleon. Soul, depth diversity and sheer artistry.
How the fuck could his voice have changed so much in such a short career? Drugs?
Talent on loan from God?

The hottest female singer with the best voice evah.
I always wanted to bend her over and make her Mexican ass sequel.
Hell, at 73 with Parkinson's ... I'd still drop the hammer.
Shit, she lives in my neighborhood (Richmond District)... maybe I'll head over to her house in Sea Cliff and show her the truth.

The foremost expert on the king.
So why would I EVER say what you just claimed?
Guess you need reading skills.
Comprehend much?
Sinatra ella and elvis interpreted lyrics BETTER than the actual songwriter could've possibly imagined.
That's iconic.
Especially when those interpretations garner critical acclaim.
And in elvis's case, multiple genres of music.
Diversity.

Re: Signature Songs?
A signature song is one most closely associated with an individual performer. Kate Smith's signature song was God Bless America, written by Irving Berlin. My Way is most closely associated with Sinatra even though it was written by Paul Anka. Wayne Newton's sig song is Danke Schoen, but he didn't write it. No Harlem Globetrotter wrote Sweet Georgia Brown. There are multitudes of other examples.

Sid Vicious sang My Way, only version of it I've heard but if he didnt write it, its not his signature song.
often, a songwriter gets his ass handed to him when an artist OWNS his words.
In other words?
The songwriter couldn't compare with another artist's soulful interpretation of his or her own words.
Your IQ cannot grasp that reality.
Re: Signature Songs?
What a moronic statement.
Sometimes an artist blows away the songwriter. It happens.
Just because you wrote the words, doesn't mean you recorded the best version.
Sometimes an artist comes along and OWNS YOU. with your own words.
Funny how some of you low IQ cocksuckers are having trouble getting this.

First, I made it through Eating African Penis's first post. Skipped the rest.
Dire Straits -- Money For Nothing. Forbetter or worse, they got involved with the douche known as Sting, which was their demise.
The Police -- Probably that piece of shit known as Every Breath You Take. Should have retired while it was still Roxanne.
Linda Ronstadt -- Probably is Blue Bayou... maybe When Will I Be Loved.
Jefferson Airplane/Starship -- JA - White Rabbit. JS will always be associated with We Built This Shitty (sup Toolio).
Elvis -- There isn't one. Way too popular, way too big an icon, for way too long to have a single defining tune.
The Who -- See: Elvis
The J. Geils Band -- Only got popular after the sellout (sup Dire Straights). So Centerfold.
Credence Clearwater Revival -- Pick one... they all sound the same.
Green Day -- The one that's named after the shithole 60 miles north of me (and it is a shithole).
Janis Joplin -- Me And Bobby McGee

Re: Signature Songs?
No one's arguing that My Way is Sid's sig song. Most people don't immediately think of Sid when they hear it. Nor do they usually associate it with Paul Anka; most people don't even know he wrote it. A sig song is, in most cases of popular music, applied to a performer, not the composer, although there are sig songs for composers as well.

I actually stole that line from Dennis Miller. The former weekend update guy from SNL, turned Reagan conservative.
It is a 17th century term.
A jib sail
But today, more like "I get you".
A friendly term.
We think alike. etc....
Gay? I don't think so
But nowadays with the left wing socialists? Who the fuck knows anymore.
The left has destroyed society as we know it.
Gone are the days where women were women and men were men.
Didn't need no welfare state.
Everyone pulled their weight.

AND let me just add,
The lyrics are a part of the creative process. But then you must take those words into the studio and breathe soul into them. Bring the words to life.
Too many low IQ's think that once the words are on paper,
That's it!!! Done!!! Over!!!
Yet it's only the beginning.
Anyone who thinks that a song can only be done by the songwriter? Is a fool.
We'd be cheated out of the greatest records of all time!
Imagine?
No Ray Charles masterpiece of "America the beautiful".
No Johnny cash masterpiece of "hurt".
You stifle the creative process by only allowing the original writer to bring voice to his or her words.
Make sense?

To further your point, a "signature song" is one that people who aren't big fans of a particular band/singer most closely associate with that act.Smackie Chan wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2019 4:05 am

In fact, maybe we should all proclaim our tiny penises by rooting for a team from a university we didn't graduate from.
