In September 2009 I was sitting on my back deck drinking a beer one afternoon and watching the usual Cessna 150 trainers and some Robinson egg beaters fly out to the practice areas. One of the Robinsons was flying back to Hillsboro about 300 ft AGL, the engine coughed once, and then the rotor clutch went and that fucker went down like a rock. Shards of melting and burning titanium floating down. I knew it was in a bad access area and headed over there to guide the EMS in. I finally found a way in and found the wreck with a deputy. Couple of pieces taller than 2 feet but it was a pile of burning material. But the time the fie was put out there were a couple of charred torsos left.

Student 25, and instructor 37, killed in the crash.

I will stay with my fixed wing aircraft, chances are much better to live.

Yeah, the Chinook CH 47 is a pretty bad ass helicopter. My boys flew in them a lot in Afghanistan and Iraq. They have a tremendous lift capability and are used in fire suppression a lot. I was photographing one at the Redmond, OR airport last year, they taxied out a bit run up the power and just fucking shot up into the sky and was gone. Amazing

Sometimes you have to. But no one is going to allow you to fly when there's only quarter mile visibility. (in some cases, a plane won't be sent out even with current reported 100% visibility, because if the weather turns as expected neither the pilot nor the carrier want the pilot to overnight it in some of these villages. but you guys already dealt with that in the military.)

Someone on a very popular site said the pilot had not filed an instrument flight rule plan. How many hours did the pilot have, to feel confident enough to fly by visual in a fog? and under what conditions is visual flight ever allowed for helicopter pilots? How often did the outfit allow their pilots to not file an ifr plan in less than pristine weather?

any airplane. He was the BEST
because the US Military trains the best.

It's no fun to be a civilian in the middle of a situation where pilots quit (or get fired for being less than functional alcoholics on the job), and one veteran pilot has to haul multiple legs by himself until the light fails and relief is found.

It's not a race thing. It's an experience thing, and an owner thing, and a compensation thing. The FAA will ensure this doesn't happen again for this outfit, if they want to stay in business. But lives are lost because something slipped along the way, safety wise.

When it comes to flying, I want the pilot who is safety minded working for the company which is also safety minded. I don't know what the profit margin of that company is, though. Dollars to donuts, it's not the only private L. A. outfit cutting corners to mollify customers and earn profits. If they had told Kobe they couldn't fly, would he have driven his caravan of 8 people, or would he have shopped around to find someone who would fly?
