NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An Indian rape victim is being forced by village elders to "marry" her rapist -- her father-in-law, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Community leaders in Charthawal village, backed by local Muslim clerics, believe that by being raped, 28-year-old Imrana's 10-year marriage has been nullified under Islamic law, The Asian Age newspaper said.

Holding a special council on Sunday, village leaders ordered the mother of five to leave her husband, Noor Mohammed, and live with her parental family for seven months and 10 days and make herself "pure" again, The Age said. It did not say how she becomes pure.

After that, she must "marry" her father-in-law and live with him, along with his legal wife.

"She... will then be like a mother to Noor Mohammed," the paper quoted local cleric Shamim Ahmad saying.

Her four brothers have agreed to the edict. She has not but in India, victims of crime often have nowhere to turn and with even her own family supporting the edict she may have little choice.

Police are now investigating and say they plan to arrest the father-in-law. They refuse to comment on the village elders' ruling, saying it is a sensitive religious issue.

The village is in Uttar Pradesh, one of India's poorest and most backward states and its most populous, with more than 165 million people, more than Russia's 145 million.

The sickest Muslim practice that I've heard of is female circumcision. From what I've heard, it's mostly practiced in Africa. When a girl is about 10 years old, they take a needle and thread and sew up her labia minora at the base, leaving only a tiny opening for menstruation to pass through. They then take two sharp rocks and smash them together, cutting off the labia minora and her clitoris.

This is done to remove all manner of sexual pleasure for the women. Sexual pleasure is reserved for the men only.

For the women that don't die of infection, the stitches are removed after the wound seals up. When the woman is married, it's considered the elder's privilege to essentially tear her back open again on the wedding night and before she's passed on to her husband.

A friend of mine, who is a Born-Again Christian, just returned from a two-week trip to Turkey. Trust me, Islam in Turkey is not the same as the Islam in Iran or Saudi Arabia, in fact, most of the Muslims in Turkey abhore the type of Islam that is practiced in those countries, which is ironic, being that they have their own battles with their own government, which doesn't allow Islam to be taught in schools, nor girls to wear the head-scarf.

Think about it. The U.S. has more religious freedom for Christians than Turkey has for Muslims, and Turkey is 98 percent Muslim.

And it's not just a matter of Turkey "wanting to get into the E.U." This goes back to the early 1920s. Turkey got rid of the Arabic alphabet and language, after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

There is a moderate form of Islam in Turkey.

But nevermind. Most of you idiots have never even traveled overseas. Just keep on stereotyping and being ignorant.

I could have. But I didn't. Turkey is the way it is because Kemal Ataturk and his cohorts broke the power of the clerics. The "moderate Islam" practiced in Turkey is the way it is because the secular government knows that if you give these fanatics an inch, they'll cut your infidel hand off. The people who run Turkey know better than most what happens when you allow Muslim clerics any kind of power whatsoever. That's why Islam is not taught in the schools and why the head scarf is not allowed.

But they are an exception, not the rule in the Muslim world.

Peter the Great did the same thing to the Orthodox Church in Russia when he forced all men to shave.
