For starters, God created the coffee bean. It seems quite illogical that he would make such a great morning beverage, and then say, DO NOT DRINK.

Good analogy. Friend in high school and after was a "jack" mormon. He hung out with us, did not drink or smoke dope. Went to school and got a business degree, came back and took his Dads real estate action. He told me when you are making a deal with Mormon, and he gives you a slight smile, hold onto your wallet because he is trying to find a way to fuck you in the deal. The secret smile.

The ones I am aware of are armed to the teeth, truly do have a years worth of shit stored up, they run communication exercises on ham radio all the time, simplex HF mostly no repeaters. Not a people to be fucked with.

I assume your friend was stationed at Hill AFB outside Ogden. That wasn't my experience when I was stationed there in the early 80s. Our Mormon neighbors and acquaintances were all quite friendly and accepting of us.

If you want a somewhat interesting take on early Mormonism, read the first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet. You'll likely come away with a different, albeit not necessarily better, view of their faith & culture.
