Who’s playing the market right now?
I’ve been hitting some small Calls/Puts for the last two weeks while this horizontal bottom is playing well in to some short plays.
Long plays will be the airlines. Travel is necessary. BA could be a good get and I’m also a huge fan of Oxy. They spent most of 2019 acquiring and fortifying their positions in midstream sector, so they were already low when the crash hit. Their gains could be bigger than everyone else’s in O&G sector.
What’s your strategy?

I've been long on Southwest (LUV) for a number of years. They're down quite a bit in the past month (28%) but not nearly as much as the industry as a whole (42%). Hopefully they'll come back as strongly as the rest and come out ahead in the long run.
I'm mostly "buy and hold" right now. I have an "emergency fund" of cash on hand but prefer to keep it for emergencies. I did take a flyer on Inovio (INO) back in February when they announced that they were working on a Covid-19 vaccine. Bought it at 3.5, sold it two weeks later at almost 10 and made a tidy profit there. I was disappointed to see it go up to almost 20 soon after, but it crashed back to around 5. It's sitting at around 8 now so I'm satisfied.
Options are a little too scary for me. I think I'll stay with a "wait and see" strategery for now.

I'm not buying anything or selling anything. I have a couple mutual funds along with stock in GE, Bank of America, and Revlon. My biggest asset is the equity in my home here in SW FL.

I don’t handle this. We have a guy who makes our trades for us. He gets paid only on our gain. Probably not going to be a good year for him.

My option plays have been for very little but while this volatility is going on, it’s been good gains while the floor has been established. It’s possible a new floor is made when earnings reports come out in a couple weeks. Everyone is seeing what the hedge funds are gonna do, but the individual investor is what’s going to drive the market. That’s why we’re seeing a bit of a rally before this thing has plateau’d. Everything was grossly oversold.Mikey wrote:I've been long on Southwest (LUV) for a number of years. How long you had GE, wolfie?
Hopefully not too long. That has been one sad long decline in what was once one of, if not the greatest company in the world.
As for getting in/out, no thanks. I don't know nearly enough about the wall street casino to play that game. I just keep my head down and keep plowing 30% of my gross income into it. The way I look at this is, I am buying at a discount for a while.
Sure woulda been nice to have a crystal ball though the last month or so. Coulda made a ton getting in/out.

Back before the huge drops, I was playing Costco, Apple and Boeing day trading. Made about 30K in three weeks. Used the profits to back up existing positions in Apple, Facebook, Dollar General, ATT, Abbive, Gilead Sciences bought them all down low so my dollar average on those holdings is much better.
Market go too freaky for me to be day trading anymore so I will hold tight on existing positions and make it as it goes back up. Anything I own now does not have real wide swings, so a bad day does not hurt me much and a good day helps a lot. All invested in equities and some income holdings now. Have the usual liquid cash accounts for savings, emergencys and car replacements. That is do not touch money that I can get my hands on in less than 24 hours.
Made about $ 5,000 today, still down $ 25,000 from before this shit hit, but that is not too bad. Just going to let it all ride for a while. Will have to watch real estate a bit if this shit drags on a while. I am holding some bare dirt properties that I had planed on selling one piece every other year for income, not due to sell one until 2021 now, I have plenty of income to cover expenses and for fun stuff, no need to speculate on those.

I asked my guy about Dollar General since I have seen it mentioned a few places along with here. Apparently we were in it shortly after their big expansion was mentioned and we are now out of it. Oh well.

Interesting concept. They serve small markets and under served areas. They plan on building 11,000 stores nationally. I took a $ 7,800 position in them about 6 months ago. Time will tell.Left Seater wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 1:52 amI asked my guy about Dollar General since I have seen it mentioned a few places along with here. Re: Who’s playing the market right now?
Have some tech stocks on a long play right now AMZN, GOOG, MSFT, AAPL, and BABA. All doing pretty well. I’m also using these same stocks to play some Bull and Bear Vertical spreads in the options game and I’m making some major strides with these short plays. Took some flyers on BYND, STMP, and Wayfair. All big hits. Wish I knew to go in on online education sector but missed that boat. Going to dive in now and hold a couple positions there. Fossil Fuels and airlines really slow to move here. Think UAL is a good long play and so is OXY.

ENPH, NVDA, LCRX, ADBE, AMAT, DELL
Long on all of these, except for ADBE which I delved into about a month ago.
ENPH is up about 1100% since I first bought in.
Not into options - it's too dangerous.
I have a long play on Southwest Airlines. Way down now but will probably lead all of the airlines in coming back. I've also owned some Costco for quite a while, which hasn't done too badly.

Re: Who’s playing the market right now?
If you hedge two bids close together it really isn’t. The only time it becomes dangerous is if you guess wrong on where to place the call/put. And there are enough technical indicators out there to put you in the 95% range that you’re going to guess right. You get to know five stocks, you marry them and know everything there is to know about their fundamentals and technicals. Once you know their ins and outs and know how to read 6-7 indicators on a chart, you’re good. There are outliers of course and I’m sure a lot of people got burned on those plays when the country closed; however, there were indicators on those as well.

As a side note, today I became old enough to qualify for Medicare. Not enrolling though, because my employer has good coverage and an HSA that I can put money into. I've been thinking that retirement might be a couple of years down the road (I reach FRA around the end of next year) but I sure am getting used to not having to drive into the office.
Re: Who’s playing the market right now?
You’re 100% right about not diving in. I read five different books and played with a papertrade account for about six months before I made my first play with real money. There’s a lot that goes into it and it takes practice and rereading a lot of material. You definitely have the mental chops to do it if I can. Just takes some time upfront.

As for silver and gold, what are the pros and cons when you never actually touch them whether buying via the stock market or paying someone else to store it? How do you trust the precious metals you 'buy' are actually physically there, in either case?
What happens to it after you die?
Re: Who’s playing the market right now?
I have no idea on buying shares of it. I’ve only bought physical silver bars, but I’m thinking of trading it in for physical gold. Some commodity analysts believe silver is going to lose value over time. Not sure if that’s true.

Re: Who’s playing the market right now?
Mikey, I’m loving LUV now. Buffett pulled all of his airline investments and people followed suit which drove LUV to all time lows. Their cash position and domestic dominance has them in best position to recover quicker than most. The technical analysis also has it grossly oversold. TSA numbers to be released this morning and air traffic control stats show uptick in traffic. This is damn good short and mid term value buy.

I've been in it since 2015 when I sunk $10K @ $43.00. It always did OK, not spectacular but solid, until the Rona hit. I'm now down about 25% on my initial cost but fully expect to come back. Plus it's paid me about $700 in dividends over that time.
Re: Who’s playing the market right now?
My best short term buy was Inovio Pharmaceuticals, when they announced they were working on a Covid-19 vaccine, which I bought on Feb 12 at $3.48 and sold on March 5 at $9.47.
I was a little pissed off at myself because it went up to something like $15 in the next few days. Then it went back down to $5. I think it's around $14 now but I'm happy with it. Made a little over $18K in three weeks on that when the rest of the market was getting ready to tank. It was a roll of the dice from the beginning.
Nice thing is that this is all within my rollover IRA so it's tax deferred and there's no short term gain on top of regular income tax when I eventually have to withdraw the funds.

Re: Who’s playing the market right now?
I watched the VIX and saw it break resistance late Tuesday afternoon so I move my stop losses on all but ones stock up very tight and was kicked out of all of them by Wednesday morning. I looked at technicals on Amazon and Tesla and noticed they were way overbought and then I saw Nasdaq bust 10000. Tech sector was due for a massive sell off so I bought $10k worth of SQQQ premarket this morning and got in at 8.13. NASDAQ took a massive dump with the rest of the markets and I made $1100 today while the walls caved in on the masses. Gotta stick and move in this market. I’m holding onto it another day, but futures are up so my lucky run may be coming to an end soon.
