I was tested yesterday for the first time. No symptoms but I have a surgical procedure scheduled on Monday and the test is required. Fortunately it came back “not detected.”

Anything else would have been a huge surprise. After all, I haven’t been to any indoor gatherings attended by hoards of maskless MAGA morons.

It was a drive- up testing station run by the UC San Diego Medical Group. I had to have an appointment. Got there about 25 minutes early and was fourth in line and done within 10 minutes.

They jammed the same swab up both nostrils. Told me it was a “mid-depth” swab or something like that. About 2 or 3 seconds on each side. It was still enough to make me wince, but not too bad . Wouldn’t want to try the deep sea probe.

That's good to hear. I had heard that Southern California had really good testing turn around times, because that's the whole point, duh. My colleague here in the District needed to get a test with a 72-hour turnaround and she could not find any place that could fit this time frame. The city is doing free testing but I have heard varying reports on how fast they can give you results.

Really infuriating that six months into this bullshit we don't have consistent testing standards and testing of reliable quality throughout the nation. Fuck you Donald Dump and fuck everyone who enables this piece of shit.

I don't think that most people realize that he's not only putting the Secret Service agents lives at risk but also their careers. To be on the Presidential Service you have to be in top physical condition. If these agents get covid they'll likely have some lasting physical effects that disqualify them from the presidential guard team. Sure they'll probably get transferred to another division but the are the top agents that have worked their whole lives to reach that level and it's not easy to get there

E: My brother was in the Marines and after basic he was thinking about going into the presidential guard. Since he had seen a psychiatrist once as a teen and was prescribed a single round of meds he would have been disqualified, instead he went into Force Recon. These agents have basically had to be perfect their entire lives to qualify for the position.

I remember an incident when Bill Clinton invited a number of gay activist to the White House. And all the Secret Service members wore rubber gloves. Presumably, it was over concerned about HIV/AIDS which was still not very well understood at the time. Afterwards, Clinton essentially lined them up and berated them for embarrassing him and themselves and the White House.

But it’s insanely uncommon for Secret Service to actually speak out on anything. It’s basically instant termination if you’re caught. There can’t be any doubt about you or you’re essentially disqualified.

Gonna reply to my reply since this got some interest. I grew up around DC and EVERYONE worked for the Fed. It is by far the largest employer in that region. I am one degree of separation from people who worked in the White House. Not appointed, career people. So they are there administration after administration for 30 years. I'm one degree of separation from people who worked in the FBI, NSA, DEA, DOD, FDA, NASA, and damn near every agency other than CIA, which they don't tell you. But I know people who consulted for the CIA and they weren't under the same secrecy mandates.

Secret Service works like the military. Respect the uniform, not the person. They protect POTUS and the office of the President of the US, not Trump. When I said it was grounds for termination if they were biased, they wouldn't be canned. They'd be shifted elsewhere. Like doing anti-counterfeiting, which is also SS duty.

If you scroll around through history, you'll never see career people saying, "yes, as spokesperson for the FBI, we think that's a dumb idea and [president] is a fool." They can't do that. The career people are the actual ones who make govt work. Mick Mulvaney might say "do this and this and that," but he just has a big desk and corner office. He has no actual idea how the insanely complex and megalithic machinery works. Which is what they career people do. They're the boiler room operators on the enormous steam ship. But they don't get to pick sides like regular folks do. They can't do an ass job of running the govt just because they don't like who is steering the ship. That would be disastrous for the country. Deep State is an absurd concept. Because every 4 years, govt would alternately shut down or malfunction as partisan employees sabotage their bosses over differences of opinion. If it's not directly illegal, they do it. Which is why we need to protect whistleblowers. Because we will never hear about all the nuts and bolts and behind the scenes if they don't talk.

As another aside, this was more often during the Cold War, but very regularly, discrete guys would come walking around our neighborhood asking questions about our neighbors. What that means is someone was applying for increased security clearance. I was interviewed. And EVERYONE in the area was working for the Fed and EVERYONE would tell those assholes that our neighbors were awesome people who didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Because govt workers are just people. They have families and mortgages and car payments and they also have spies walking around to try and find out if they can be trusted with a promotion or they're talking shit (or talking confidential).

Both my parents had extremely high level clearance at one point or another. And I knew almost nothing about what they did. I saw a manual sitting out once on the apache helicopter and I asked if I could take it in to show and tell at school. No. We had a framed photo in the back corner of the den on the internals of a Tomahawk cruise missile. My mother told me a story about how when they were reporting on the casualties in Vietnam, she was handling internal memos that directly contradicted those numbers. And she wasn't a fan of Vietnam. But it was against the law for her to reveal that classified information and at the best she'd lose her job so she kept quiet.

The SS is a whole other level on that. And agents rotate out of duty protecting the first family very often to prevent burn out and reduce the liability of there being the few people who have direct access.

I've never seen this level of openness by the SS and it's pretty scary.
