Hammer Down
Later, Henry
Fuck Barroid Bonds, Hammerin' Hank is still the Home Run King. Still remember watching him hit #715 off Gentleman Al Downing, 44 hitting it off of 44, and Tom House (now Dr. House, Tom Brady's throwing guru) catching it in the bullpen. Aaron was a great guy and a great player. RIP

RIP.
I never saw him play that I can remember. I was 3 when he retired but have seen plenty of videos. Class act and we need more of him today.

RIP to one of my first sports heroes.
Interesting stat is Hank never hit 50 dingers in a season, but damn, did he hit 40+ an awful lot. My guess is had he played later against pitchers not named Gibson or Kofax, he would have put up many 50+ years and would have been well into the 800s.

Re: Hammer Down
If he had played later he might have been tempted to take the route of Bonds & McGuire. That would mean being more injury-prone, resulting in less lifetime hr's.dan's college room mate wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 8:00 pm RIP to one of my first sports heroes.

Re: Hammer Down
As a kid I read all the paperback books being churned out about various baseball stars.
It had all the stats including who his hrs were hit against. I seem to recall that Don Drysdale was the victim of an awful lot.
I’d guess he was probably his favorite victim.

Re: Hammer Down
Drysdale was indeed Hank's greatest victim.
Henry went yard on him 17 times.

Re: Hammer Down
Bob Costas (aging lesbian club) had a nice interview with Hammerin' Hank just a few weeks ago...
Almost 3,300 games and never once ejected.
Also interesting to me was when I pulled up his stats is that Hank hit over .300 for his career.
I always had the imagine of him in my mind that he was mainly a massive HR and RBI guy.
However, he was more than that.

Re: Hammer Down
Like I said, Hank never hit 50. Just a very good, consistent hitter with a little bit of pop in his bat. I'd compare him to Willie Mays or Ted Williams. He wasn't a Reggie Jackson/Mickey Mantle, hit it into the next county type of hitter.

Re: Hammer Down
Aaron and Mays were quite similar. They started just a few years apart. Mays played 22 seasons, Aaron 23. Hank had more HRs but Candlestone was a lot harder to hit a ball out of. They both had about the same career BA. Hank is actually third on the all time hits list, Willie #12.

Re: Hammer Down
Yeah, put Willie in Fenway and he has a bunch more.
Unless he's a line drive hitter.
I saw Carlton Fisk drill one into the top of the green monster once that I swear, would have been out of any other park in the league. I think the OFer fielded it cleanly and held him to a single.
Aaron/Mays definitely comparable other than Willie being faster and better fielder. But then Willie was the best center fielder in history, so that's not a knock on the Hammer.
