Didn’t tell ERCOT how to maintain their grid.

(You should be adjusting your capacitors. At least twice a month.)

Good thing for y’all that GOP secession thing didn’t go through yet.

Disaster declarations should be above politics. Props to Biden.

I have heard far more about CA succession lately than in Texas

But yeah, keep taking your shots, karma tends to be a bitch. Meanwhile when fires get close to your casa again most of us will continue to offer our well wishes and prayers.

When Cali burns again, I suspect we'll say what we've been saying.

Manage your forest better. Firebreaks are a thing. Fill them with solar panels if that makes you feel better.

Like I said you will blame Cali to the same degree you give a pass to Texas even though forests are not power grids and the Corp kleptos at PGE cause many of the fires.

You've got me all wrong, my brother. I have never wished ill on y'all or any of the good people of Texas. Hell, my granddaughter is in school at SMU. Luckily they didn't get shut down, but also made sure in advance that everybody had a good supply of drinking water. Her mom owns a rental property in Austin. She hasn't been able to contact the property manager but it appears that it's pretty well trashed. They were shut down for two days.

This has been a terrible and unprecedented disaster. I hope you and yours are doing OK. I see that I neglected to ask about that, but maybe assumed you were OK because you hadn't mentioned being shut off. Certainly Bill in Houston is in a bad situation.

I'm glad Biden signed the disaster declaration. You're right it shouldn't be political. What a nice contrast to the previous White House occupant. You have a problem with me pointing that out?

And I think it's pretty damn funny, in a tragic sort of way, that in a state that's 100% controlled by Republicans, your Governor is out there trying to blame his administration's failures (yes multiple failures) to be prepared on Democrats and radical environmentalists. You have a problem with me pointing that out? Yes, wind turbines and the gas distribution systems can be made resilient to cold weather before the fact. I've been reading that there were plenty of warnings about this but Texas is Texas and they gonna do things their own way.

There's been plenty of ill will in Texas pointed at California during our natural disasters. Maybe not you specifically but it's pretty hard to miss some of y'all's expressed wishes that all Californians would fuck off and die. I'm not wishing that on Texas. I don't think you yourself have been too sparing in criticism of California's leadership. Should Abbott et all be immune? I don't think so. I have often been openly critical of how California's utilities are run. They have no regard for public safety except what's forced on them the Public Utilities Commission and the courts.

One of the primary reasons for ERCOT, whose territory doesn't cross state lines, is to keep Texas immune from any Federal regulation over how you run your electric grid, including resiliency requirements. This is something that has been neglected in Texas for years in the name of "free enterprise." Well, you didn't have to spend the money to be prepared and this is what you get. Who is to blame for that? Radical New Green Deal environmentalists? I don't think so.

The chickens have come home to roost. It sucks but you need to deal with it.

I love the post put out by the (now former) Mayor of Colorado City, TX

https://ktxs.com/news/local/colorado-ci ... ebook-post
No one owes you or your family anything; nor is it the local governments responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim, it’s your choice! The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING! I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn hand out!
So, the utility that you pay every month, and has a virtual monopoly, to provide a dependable supply of power doesn't owe you anything?
Ponderous.

As I said right off the top ERCOT has a lot to answer too. They did shit planning and now this is causing pain and suffering for many, especially the poors and the olds. There should be firings at ERCOT when the after action report is done.

And yes, Texas has wanted to go it alone for years and it has worked well for the most part. That isn't to say there aren't issues and fixes that must be made asap. Wouldn't you rather have someone you elected making decisions vs someone in another State that might not have your best interest at heart? I certainly would, even with the issues we have seen this week.

And just so you know we have deregulated power. The company that you pay your electric bill too, is not the same as the transmission company. So this allows people to select the power generator or purchaser of their choice that then feeds into the grid. There are plenty of issues with this model as well. But the company you are paying monthly isn't always the transmission company.

You are correct, I have called out CA leadership for their failures. Just like I have and will continue to call out those in Texas when it is warranted. For example, Ted Cruz and his family flew to Cancun for a vacation this week while millions of Texans are still without power and water. What an asshat and it is totally unacceptable. Get your ass back here and at least act like you care about the residents of this state.

True to a certain degree. But in "the rest of the country" you have regional interaction in the grid. If California has a shortage we can import power from Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, etc. if they have extra capacity. It's been done on many occasions. Not so in Texas. If you want to play with others, you have to follow the mutually agreed-to rules. If you want to go it alone, then you have to deal with your problems by yourself.

What do you mean if California has a shortage? California imports more electricity than any other State. 32% of its power needs were imported in 2018. So you are already relying on other States for your daily needs. What happens when the demand grows in those other States or they have a natural disaster that takes generation off line.

Again I would rather rely on someone I elected and can hold accountable, than someone 4 States away that has to answer to their constituents first.

A lot of states import electricity. A lot of states export electricity. Yes, California is a net importer of electricity (25% in 2019, probably less in 2020) but not nearly the largest by %. When you are on a regional grid, it allows a lot more flexibility. Texas wants to go it alone. That's your choice and it's worked pretty well. Until now. Deal with it.

We've had our problems, but haven't had anything even close to the clusterfuck you're now, unfortunately, experiencing.

Again to each their own.

Shutting down people's power because the wind blows and your power lines will start fires is a pretty big clusterfuck. Much of your State doesn't see the type of cold Texas is getting (that we haven't ever seen in recorded time) which helps for sure.

No arguments there. Like I said, I'm not exactly a proponent of how the CA utilities have handled this stuff, which has also been unprecedented until the past couple of years. But we never came close to shutting down 4 million customers at the same time.

Yes, Texas is having its shit pushed in at the moment as it experiences biblical level weather events.

Cali has been experiencing routine power fukk ups for a number of years.

If Texas has this level of failure during another cold snap 5 years down the road, then yea, they suck almost as bad as Cali.

Its not, but a good number in CA wanted the State to take over PG&E and make a public utility. Then Rona happened and I am not sure if PG&E still rated attention.

So name all the California "power fukk ups" that involved State of California-owned utilities.

Why are you harping on state government? You do know ERCOT isn’t a state entity right? It is a 501(c)(4).

Actually you prolly didn’t know that and were just vomiting on your keyboard again. If you did know, then it makes you look even dumber.

PG&E very well may be a private company, but they are forced to jump through federal and state hoops that make their job much more difficult.

To be honest with you, I believe that in the case of utilities, which for obvious reasons, have to be monopolies, perhaps it is best to just let the state or maybe county run it, rather than play the government/utility games they play.

I mean, the whole point of private companies is that they are free to compete with one another for customers. With utilities, that isn’t so.

Hope that does t get me tossed out of the racist/traitor/homophobe/mysogenist club.

You mean hoops like preparing for wx-related circumstances that might present not only a power threat, but a threat of fire as well? If anything the last big fukk up showed that California wasn't as strict with a private power company as it should have been. Google Porter Ranch gas" & you'll see another private utility fukking over citizens.

What you call hoops the rest of us call safety regulations.

My comment was aimed more towards the push to renewables.

Why didn’t PG&E have these problems 20 years ago?

Could it be because they had sufficient traditional plants in place?

Try googling "climate change."

No, it has nothing to do with plants & everything to do with greed.

PG&E very well may be a private company, but they are forced to jump through federal and state hoops that make their job much more difficult.

Yes. The first place they can save is to stop wasting money trying to ensure the stability of the electric grid.
