I've told this story a few times in TuneTown, but the first-hand account is much better. The guitarist to whom Al Kooper alludes but doesn't mention by name was Mike Bloomfield, who was considered at the time to be America's Eric Clapton - best white blues guitarist. If you can get your hands on the out-of-print book Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards, Kooper's memoir, I highly recommend it. Enjoy...
