Probably face a relatively brief "suspension" from Michigan for the episode.

A coach, especially at a non-professional level, is supposed to DE-escalate a tense situation, not cause it to explode.

Howard took a swipe at an opposing coach.
That's bad.

Then the teams went ape shit on each other for a while.

Even as that was simmering down a bit, Coach Howard was pointing, having to be restrained, and yapping his gums.

What is that?

Was it a timeout to set up a play to pile more points on? Could it just have been him wanting to get some scrubs into the game?

Look, the very late time out in a "blowout" win, Michigan still pressing with less than a minute left in a blowout loss, coaches disagreeing and jawing at each other, a coach putting his hand on the arm of another coach in effort to explain a point of view to him...

These things can, have, and do happen from time-to-time in college basketball.

What cannot happen is for a coach to throw a hand (and make contact with) at an opposing coach (or player).

That is outside the boundary.

Howard did not want to shake Gard's hand, so Gard should have just let him walk on by.
Gard did put his hand on Howard's arm, and he should not have done that.

That said, in no way did Gard provoke a confrontation.
He simply wanted to express something to Howard about the late-game strategy that irked Howard.

I find Gard's $10,000 fine to be ridiculous.

Five games for Howard?

Coach provoked a melee, which could have escalated into something even more ugly than what it did.

But, this is about what I expected.

I do not understand or agree with this take. I never wanted to lose when I played competitive sports. At the same time I always mingled with players and coaches of the other team. If we won, it is that much easier. If we lost, we needed to be better. But we still can shake hands.
