Are you trying to make the distinction between yards and meters? If so no one even references the unit of measure. The say the stroke and distance. Ie 100 free, 400IM, 200 free etc.

Those who don't know anything about competitive swimming don't make the distinction because they don't understand the differences. The 500 yard free is only swam in the US in 25 yard pools (short course). The international/Olympic event is the 400 meter free. And world records are only recognized when set in pools that are 50m long (long course), which is also the Olympic standard.

Being that one does a turn twice as much in a short course pool it favors some swimmers over others. The ability to flip the legs over & glide well after pushing off the wall gives some swimmers an advantage over those who might excel in a long course pool. Thus, there's not only not a 500m free, but there's a big difference between how swimmers perform in the 500 yd free versus the 400 meter free in a long course pool.

Which proves that yes, you were wrong. And that schmuck doesn't know what the fuck he spews out of his keyboard & nor possesses the intelligence to Google basic information.
