The difference is in the historic and present-day effect of lynchings; the idea that the person who was killed is not the only victim. And lynchings are typically motivated by the victim’s race, religion, sexual orientation, or other identifier. Lynching has typically sent a message to an entire community that ‘you’re not safe here’ or ‘you could be next.

Occasionally the lynching party--family and friends--was seeking to free the prisoner. The hanging of lynch victims, however, was always a gross violation of due process, though often the victim was in fact guilty of the charges. For his part, Emmett Till was not lynched at all, but rather kidnapped and murdered. There is an important difference, but of course the diseased and depraved Woke mob--with Gibbering Joe as its nominal leader--doesn't care at all.
