Sure he was tricked into thinking the Ukrainian defense forces were a cake walk, as well as believing his claims on the Russian populated regions would be somehow recognized. And just like in 1979 the Russians were tricked by the surprisingly smooth delivery of all sorts of high tech weaponry from the U.S. and NATO. Beneath the immediate factors there's the long term baiting by the neocons stemming from the 2014 coup--and leading steadily to the belligerent gestures by the (thoroughly corrupt) Ukrainian government. Obviously Putin didn't envision a protracted war at all, but rather a quick replacement of the (thoroughly corrupt) government. But it was a trap, and as the sabotage of the pipeline makes clear, the neocons want far more than a retreat and an apology. And it's not just Russia that they want prostrate in every sense of the word.

The accusations of a decrepit Russia have been a mainstay of Western propaganda for a couple decades now, and obviously some of it is true--but much is not. That is, there's nothing faulty or obsolete about Russian tanks, jets, missiles, artillery, or drones and surveillance. Moreover, their military and basic social mores are not infected with Wokeness and self-hating agendas fomented from within. That said, Putin obviously was oblivious to the fact that Ukraine had been supplied to the tits with all manner of the latest anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons, as well as the unprecedented geyser of money pouring in from the U.S. and the EU. He never considered that the neocons and globalists would render all of Europe to a looming nightmarish Winter--for starters--in going to the mattresses for the Nigeria of Europe (as far as corruption). Personally, I think Putin should have sought a "tough finesse" policy to slowly and steadily take control of the Russian regions cobbled into Ukraine. But having so easily taken Crimea--justifiably--he obviously thought it would be nothing more than a "special military operation." And now we're all fucked.

Infiltrating and tearing away the various republics on the borders of Russia and converting them into arms-dumps for potential aggressive action, strikes me as a provocation that should be dealt with. 'Soft Power' can be devastating to the defensive interests of a nation.
