All physical. Stored in different secure (?) locations. A few numismatic coins, maybe 10%. Some have COAs but those are pretty worthless. A few ingots, mostly bars, rounds and coins. Is some fake? I have a lot so probably, but most was bought at reputable LCSs (local coin shop) around the country. Super fun hobby. Kid learns a lot about history and metals and the countries and times they are from. Wouldn’t want all my money in PM but it’s mostly mad money and again I’m sure I have more than most of you.Steve Jobs wrote: ↑Fri Nov 11, 2022 3:20 pm So you have the actual metals and/or specie coins? Ingots, certified of course, what form? Do you have physical custody or a key to a bank vault.
Or are you in some sort of derivitive like futures or traded securities. If so, you are in the fiat money world.

I have been listening to Dave's radio show lately and started lurking after a long absence. I finally snapped and had to call Kierland (whoever that is/was) out on his nonsense. The guy is simply terrible.Softball Bat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 11, 2022 12:34 amFirst post ---> in 12 years <--- and you come in and lay the wood to Kierland.

This thread has really gone off the rails. What started as a mild rant session about mortgage rates and homeless encampments has quickly devolved into Squirm Worm standing on a rotted pallet while screaming that he has more ingots and gold coins and bars than anyone else here, all stored in a showebox under his trailer. And presently he'll regale us on how he'll presumably trade these for canned goods in the imminent Mad Max future.

I think his point is that it is a shame that this is the case. Your kids are both young, successful and married. They should be in a position to buy if their intent was to stay there long term. I'm sure they'd love to buy.
But as ole GW said, it wouldn't be prudent. Not now.
And this is the case because the federal government through their meddling continues to promote boom/bust cycles in real estate. How many fukking times do we need to replay 2008? 2.5% mortgages come with a price. That price will be paid over the next few years.
Of course, this same cycle is of great benefit to those clever/lucky enough get in/out at the right time.
Well, if ya can't beat'em, join them, i guess. If the FL condo market takes as big a dump as it did in '08, I might hop on the ride myself.
My guess is this go around, FL doesn't collapse as badly as it will be the haven for many who hand over the keys to their upside down crib in SD.

Re: What will happen to Cali in the next few years?
Who owns this current collapse?
Somewhat a bipartisan effort, I'd say, but I have to give the dems the nod for owning a controlling interest.
The insane drops in the prime rate were delivered by Barry in an attempt to breath life into an economy he was choking in a number of ways. The Reps to their discredit did mostly go along. And The Bad Orange Man also had his hand in it when he howled when the fed hinted at raising rates in the slightest. Had he more sense, he would have championed the rates returning to a sane level.
The CV hit and both sides initial reaction was shameful. But at least the Reps came to their senses reasonably early. The dems wanted to continue the insanity, if only to show how much they cared compared to the evil reps who wanted to kill granny by coughing on her.
Then came the coup de grace. Bidden going for the throat of domestic oil production. This is the primary reason we now have historical inflation. Vlad's shenanigans then turned it up to 11.

Re: What will happen to Cali in the next few years?
I will give you one point.
Capitalism is prone to market fluctuations and when the government tries to "help" it, these fluctuations get worse.
Big government socialism on the other hand doesn't cause crashes because it never gets off the ground in the first place. No need to worry about troublesome real estate crashes if no one owns real estate, after all.
US capitalism's track record of deep crashes started not long after government went all in on crash prevention in 1930.
You'd think nearly 100 years later we'd have figured that out and let the markets sort things out.
If you have any examples of another system working anywhere, let's hear it. Or are you one of thse that thinks socialist utopia can only come when it dances on the grave of capitalism?

If socialism didn’t work there would have been no reason for Vietnam or the Cuban embargo or a million other “red scare” propaganda campaigns, if capitalism worked there would be no need for slavery, which I have pointed out many times was not outlawed by the 13th amendment. You’re in a cult, and you act like it.
And also again, the only thing that saved our capitalism in the last 150 years was the aforementioned slavery and socialism. Think FDR.

So, we were obliged to just sit on our hands and watch socialism gooble up the planet, through force, one country after the next?Kierland wrote: ↑Sat Nov 12, 2022 5:44 pm If socialism didn’t work there would have been no reason for Vietnam or the Cuban embargo or a million other “red scare” propaganda campaigns, if capitalism worked there would be no need for slavery, which I have pointed out many times was not outlawed by the 13th amendment. And also again, the only thing that saved our capitalism in the last 150 years was the aforementioned slavery and socialism. Think FDR.
After the war we decided to allow the Soviets to get their socialism on in their country as well as their sphere of influence. They were free to show us how it's done. And they failed magnificently. between them and the Chinese they had an immense area, overflowing with natural resources.
If their system worked, they would have demonstrated it and eventually, we'd have gotten jealous and jumped on the bandwagon.
As for slavery, it was an albatross around our neck. Our country thrived once we rid ourselves of it. The North was far richer than the south and it got that way partly because it was free.
Slavery, it seems, is a poor economic motivational tool. The south proved it as did the Soviets in the 20th century.
The chinks took notes and adapted economic capitalism and pulled hundreds of millions out of abject poverty. The trouble now is that when people get a taste of economic freedom, they want more. But the CCP also saw what a taste of glasnost did to the Soviets and aren't likely to repeat it. So, as they clamp down on that economic freedom, they'll implode. Also, their demographics are a ticking time bomb.
FDR didn't save shit. He oversaw the better part of a decade of the worst economic crisis in US history. Eventually, a different form of socialism, called total war, dragged us out of it.
Of course, that's a pretty shitty way to get out of economic doldrums.

I actually do think that SS was a viable system....in 1935. It was actuarily sound, given life expectancy at the time.
Modern medicine has changed this. It has given us close to a 20 year bump in life expectancy without a similar increase in age of eligibility. Add to this the fact that the feds have been using it as a piggy bank for over 50 years to pay for all the great society bullshit and you have a looming disaster.

Are all hyper-rich fukks oligarchs?
By definition, an oligarch is an extremely rich individual who uses this economic power to gain political power and then use that political power to subjugate citizens.
Capitalist oligarchs more tyrannical? Is that your stand?
There is a current crop of crony capitalists in Russia making a decent enough show, but that is the fault of state gorruption, not capitalism.
And even that bunch are pikers compared to Stalin, Mao and Hitler. And please, save me the Hitler was right wing bullshit. He was a nationalist, but he was very much in favor of government control of the means of production, even if he did it through his crony capitalist henchmen.
In a more libertarian system, you'd undoubtedly have very rich people, but they'd have no political power they could weild to fukk people over.
You lefties complain about rich fukks buying political influence, but you never answer the question of why is this influence so fukking valuable?
If we would stop wiping our collective arse with the 10th ammendment, these evil capitalists might stop throwing away so much money on politics because there wouldn't be a huge payoff.

China is currently embarked on a campaign of hegemony in Africa (and South America) unrivaled since the Mongol Horde. All without a shot being fired. In Korea and Vietnam the "socialist" governments quickly abanodned the agreed upon borders and sought to conquer and assimilate the nations of South Korea and South Vietnam. The Soviet Union of course immediately impounded all of Eastern Europe and place it under strict totalitarian control.Kierland wrote: ↑Sat Nov 12, 2022 6:59 pm Name one socialist country that is gobbling up other countries.
