As for Filmore, the Fugitive Slave Act was not just immoral but should have been re-examined as unenforceable and against both the spirit and the letter of States' Rights. Alabama has no business dictating to Vermont, because Alabama sure as hell was not honoring any of Vermont's demands.

I believe the only reason why the Fugitive Slave Act could exist would be the overwhelming power which planters and the bankers who underwrote them had. I believe Fillmore was bowing to the Black Rock's of his day. He fucked up. Since he fucked up, the real story what did they have on him? Where was he blackmailable?

Fillmore's real claim to fame was firmly establishing the premise and goal of Manifest Destiny. And is was in service of this cause twenty years later that Lincoln declared war on the southern states seeking to secede. The issue of slavery was secondary.

In S.F. the street (and charming old concert hall) named in his honor will remain so, as will the street named for Justin Hermann--a genuine hero--though his name was stricken from the large plaza at the foot of Market St. Interestingly, William Randolph Hearst, who loomed over S.F. for decades, is honored with but a tiny street way out in the avenues.

But even the torch and pitchfork Woke mob has its limits. Back when the lockdown lunacy began a radical group in S.F.'s school board tried to hustle through a measure to rename ALL schools and buildings named for white people. Not only was this rash move rebuffed, but a successful (and expensive) recall effort was promptly launched and they were all shitcanned. Naturally they all filed law suits claiming racial discrimination, but they're gone. :wink:
