I remember Gowdy more for football, never really listened to Carey much as a Yankees fan.

I think McCarver understood the game at a level most didn't and was able to speak passionately about it ( in full sentences).

Not really a fair comparison since Gowdy & Caray were play-by-play announcers whereas McCarver was an analyst. I never had a problem with McCarver, always thought he provided insight without too much smarter-than-thou 'tude. Could ball, too.

Also, I think the lines have blurred somewhat over the years. Analysts, typically the ex jock, want to seem more "professional" by acting more like the "sports reporter" and the "non-athlete" reporter wants to sound like the tough ex jock.

It's only natural that that should happen since in both cases, one is trying to establish himself or be taken seriously in the other's world. The professional broadcaster play-by-play announcer is likely a failed or wannabe athlete who wants those he's reporting on (and the general audience) to take him seriously regarding not just his knowledge of x's & o's, but of the game's physicality as well; hence, the adoption of the tough guy ex-jock persona. The former athlete turned analyst often wants to show that even though he's not "classically trained" as a broadcaster, possesses the natural chops and has either overcome or defied being the stereotypical dumb jock and can eloquently string multi-syllable words together to convey coherent and insightful thought. Both are trying to demonstrate that not only do they belong, but are naturals at what it is they are doing.

I wouldn't say that this is something that has only recently occurred (and I'm not implying you are, either), but I'm thinking of analysts like Dan Dierdorf and others going farther back than him who were ex-athletes trying to sound like seasoned sports reporters as opposed to, say, Don Meredith, who seemed to happily embrace the down-home, not-too-edumacated, folksy ex-jock who made no effort (thankfully) to make the audience believe he was really smarter than he was, even though he actually was well-versed on the subject matter.

I've mentioned this before, but we SoCals who grew up there in the 60-s-70s were spoiled when it came to our teams' play-by-play announcers: Vin Scully for the Dodgers, Chick Hearn for the Lakers, and Dick Enberg for the Rams, Angels, & UCLA Bruins basketball.

I used to alternate between watching Dodgers games on TV and listening on the radio. Vin Scully's booth partner was Jerry Doggett, who frankly wasn't very good; he'd get too worked up during plays and would stumble over his words as he was trying to describe the action. He'd usually have to tell listeners what happened rather than what's happening. He & Scully would alternate between TV & radio for 3-inning shifts when the games were being simulcasted. Scully might start off on TV for the first 3 innings, switch to radio for the middle 3, and back to TV for the end. He'd have stories prepared for the game, and I'd sometimes hear him tell the same story twice during the game if I switched from TV to radio or vice versa and caught him addressing the different audiences during the broadcast. No complaints, though - Vin was a master storyteller.

Bob Miller is another SoCal legend, spending 44 yrs calling LA Kings games. I didn't listen to him much cuz I wasn't into hockey.

Jack Buck and Harry Caray are the Cards’ guys I listened to. Youngsters associate Caray only with the Cubs. He spent more years with St Louis than Chicago.

McCarver was too smart for a lot of baseball fans.

Listening to Jack Buck call Cards games over a shitty transistor radio in the backyard while noshing on 'park' steaks and watermelon was summer in St. Louis when I was a kid. I got to see many Cardinal greats of that era play including McCarver.
