Aruba ???
Making plans for our 60th wedding anniversary August 31st ad would like to go to Aruba. Might as well ask here if any of you have been there and what place is good and what to avoid. The reviews on TripAdvisor et. are mixed for sure. If there is a better alternative than Aruba in the Caribbean that has hotel/casinos ala Las Vegas, I'm open to that too.
Thanks in advance.

Atlantis Bahamas (Nassau) has a huge money vacuum cleaner, errrr, casino, along with many other amenities. Yes, we have been there.
Only been to two other Caribbean countries. Aruba isn't one of them.

Wife and I honeymooned in St. Thomas USVI. Very beautiful place. That's where I got to drive on the left side of the road!

Cuba!
Fun awaits you both. Downtown Havana features a war-memorial park where you and the little lady can both laugh the day away! Shattered American tanks, aircraft and small landing craft are featured, riddled with shell holes. How their crews must have suffered!
Ho Chi Minh Park is a peaceful respite for the weary traveler. Contemplate and rest by the wishing pool.
If you seek the company of your countrymen, visit the US embassy. The laser-light show the Cuban army shines through their office windows at all hours of the day and night in breathtaking, as is the loud samba music blared through loudspeakers.
The quality of food is excellent! A little bland because of the blockade, but nothing a little salt and pepper can't fix.

I second Cuba. Been a few times. You can go legally too. I have a friend that has a license to go and she does two or three trips a year. It’s a while different world.
And nothing bland about a food. It’s literally some of the best grub I’ve ever had.

Yeah, but I'd watch that. I know Americans were allowed if the trip was for 'educational purposes', but that's changed - there's a Democrat in the White House so they're going after tourists retroactively. The US government is going after cruise lines etc, for stopping there while it was legal.
This could carry over to individuals.

While it has been a few years since I've been, I urge you to check out the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.
Can you describe what you're looking for and what you'd like to do?
And most of all, huge congrats on 60 years, that is phenomenal, and is an example for the rest of us to aspire to.
In particular, St John. One world class beach after another. We have been to PR, Antigua, Turks and Caicos, USVI and Aruba. I will give you my take on each.
PR is my overall favorite because it's awesome.....and I'm a cheap fukk. Your dollar goes much further here than anywhere else in the Carribean. Great beaches, great food, mountains and fun people.
Antigua- will always be special to us as we honeymooned there. Beautiful place. Great beaches. Pricey.
T&C- Nice beaches. Expensive. Nothing against the place, but prolly won't go back.
USVI- It is US, so no passport bullshit. Everyone speaks something resembling English. Beautiful place. Best beaches on the planet (St John). Well, best I have ever seen.
Aruba- Pricey. Nice beaches. Did I mention it was pricey? One thing that stands out is the Dutch influence. It is cleaner and more orderly than most of the islands because, well, the Dutch have their shit together a little bit better than the Spanish or English. Doubt I'd go back though because, as I may have mentioned, I'm a cheap fukk.

Re: Aruba ???
I am referring to the Carribean islands worth visiting. I have heard that your buck goes very far in the Dominican Republic, but you best keep your ass on the resort. I am sure same goes for Haiti. It may be true in Jamaica as well. Cuba likely has some good deals too.Kierland wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 12:32 pmMaybe of the places you have been, but certainly not the whole Caribbean.smackaholic wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 12:15 pmYour dollar goes much further here than anywhere else in the Carribean.
And now that I think about it, a good bit of Mexico is on the caribbean. and your dollar does go further there.

How's the water clarity in PR? It's fantastic in Jamaica but sucked in Key West.smackaholic wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 12:15 pmThis^^^^^.Jsc810 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 12:52 am I have been all over the Caribbean, and there are some absolutely beautiful places there.

Re: Aruba ???
Water clarity is all about conditions at the moment. If it is windy, a little surf can stir things up. In calm conditions, it clears up a good bit.Diego in Seattle wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 5:35 pmHow's the water clarity in PR? Re: Aruba ???
I haven't been to Cuba. I am sure it is a very nice place to do the sort of things one does in the Caribbean. I suspect it is likely quite safe for tourists as well because the jack-boot commies want it to be as they like tourism dollars just like capitalist pigs do. So they let the locals know that fukking with tourists is a really bad idea.Kierland wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 3:05 pmSo you have been to Cuba and know it’s not worth going to? What really pisses me off about you lefty fukks is your transparent hypocrisy when it comes to policing. You scream about American "pigs" slaughtering mostly brown folks for sport, but you'll give those commie bastards a pass because, well, they're on your team.
Would I go there?
No. And I fully admit it is for 100% political reasons. Fukk those authoritarian fukks.
The sad thing is that the moment they get rid of their authoritarian goons, it likely becomes a lot more like The DR where, as I said, you're fine, so long as you stay on the heavily guarded resort compound.

When was the last time a Cuban police officer slaughtered one of their citizens? You can make shit up if you want but facts don’t really care about your feelings. And one more time. Left and right and authoritarian and non-authoritarian are two totally diff concepts.
