Enough about the NBA GOAT discussion....
How about your all time dream team?
Andrather than limit it by position, what if you could pick any player, any position.
Wanna put up 5 centers? Fine. 4 point guards (why) and a small forward? Fine too.
My team-
C-Wilt
Forwards- Hakeem Olajawon and Bird. Yeah, I know, The Dream is a C. So what? Dude could do EVERYTHING. An absolute beast on D and nobody can move in the paint like him. Being a very casual fan, I never really paid him much attention. His peak years were during a time I didn't have much interest in the NBA. But in a recent discussion here about his greatness, I did a little youtube browsing of his play and heard interviews of his contemporaries who pretty much said, yeah, he is the GOAT. Shaq talked about him like he was a g0d.
Larry has to be there for his amazing team play and shit-talking!!!!
Guards- MJ and Magic MJ because he's fukking MJ and Magic for the same reason as Bird. An amazing team player.
LeBron can fukk the fukk off.
I would love to transport King James back to 1994 and watch Olajawon make him his bitch.
If there's room for another, Kobe.
Wonder how many rebounds any opposing teams could get going against Wilt and Hakeem?
Not fukking many. Maybe a team with Russel and Rodman would get a few.

If I was playing 2 on 2---I'd ask Wilt to be with me.

Re: Enough about the NBA GOAT discussion....
My starting five might depend on what era this game is being played in.
Back in the day, much more physicality was allowed.
Not so much today.
At any rate...
F - Larry Bird
F- Dennis Rodman
C- Kareem Abdul Jabbar
G- Michael Jordan
G - Magic Johnson

When played certainly does matter. In today's game, you'd want a few 3 point sharpshooters. The only one you have here is Bird. Maybe Michael in the playoffs.Softball Bat wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 5:07 am My starting five might depend on what era this game is being played in.

I remember thinking that adoption of the 3 pointer was a great idea. Looking back, I wish they never did it. At a minimum, it should be backed up a few feet.

Yes, exactly.smackaholic wrote:When played certainly does matter. In today's game, you'd want a few 3 point sharpshooters. The only one you have here is Bird. Maybe Michael in the playoffs.
If playing by today's officiating standard, I would keep Bird and Jordan, but replace Rodman, Jabbar, and maybe Magic.

Pete Maravich would have loved the 3 point line. Heck---even Dolph Schayes with his long "rainbow shots" would have had higher career points.

Re: Enough about the NBA GOAT discussion....
I'd say it'd be tough to beat during any era. All have multiple rings and can play D (even Curry). Russell & Duncan would make it real tough to get to the rim, relegating most of the opposing offense to shoot from distance.
Wilt was the most dominating player ever, but he took too much pride in never fouling out, which limited his effectiveness down the stretch of games. After he got his fourth foul, he just about shut down on D. The players I went with are known for being clutch in crunch time on both sides of the floor.
Hard to keep the likes of Kareem, Hakeem, Wilt, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Bob Cousy, Larry Bird, John Stockton, Karl Malone, & Pete Maravich off the list, though. Helluva bench.

Re: Enough about the NBA GOAT discussion....
Who would you have as head coach for your team? Phil Jackson running the triangle? Red Auerbach? Pat Riley? Bill Sharman? Larry Brown? Greg Popovich? Would it matter much with the talent on the floor?

Wouldn’t you be playing someone else’s top five? So coaching would matter. Or is this just some kind of exercise in stupidity?

Assuming facts not in evidence. Nobody said anything about who the competition would be. Good thing your stupidity is already in good shape and needs little exercise, although it gets plenty.

I didn’t assume anything tardling. I was asking which it would be, hence the “exercise in stupidity” line. I expect better than IKYABWAI from you, not sure why.Smackie Chan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 5:12 pmAssuming facts not in evidence. Nobody said anything about who the competition would be. Okay, here's something for a little mental flossing....
Pretty much every player mentioned so far has been an American. What would the GOAT non-American team look like, and how would they stack up against other teams?
