Inventor of the Fosbury Flop method of high jumping dies.

I never understood how that worked, but apparently it did.

This method is used by so many people now it's hard to remember how ridiculous the old way looked.

I'm too lazy to provide a pic. That's why google exists.

The "flop" was known before Fosbury, but the landing pit wasn't the softer foam stuff that cushions the fall after.

He won by breaking an unspoken rule. Once permission was granted to ignore the unspoken rule, that was all she wrote for the old standards. His is a good lesson about assumptions, loopholes and governing body blessings.
