Weekend Roll Call 4-22-23
New WVH
If you recall last weeks wrc, I mentioned not feeling well.
Yeah, covid. FML!!! It made it's way thru the work place this
week. A few weak employees with little intestinal fortitude took
off a day or more to recover. Those of us that know the real deal
and how company ownership discourages using sick days, nutted
up and were present for work daily, even if we were running
on fumes and likely to be virtually worthless. It was nice though
to return to the good old days of saving comp time to use when
you really want it, and not being forced to waste valuable time off.
8 days in, feeling marginal, no taste, no smell and some significant
bouts of dizziness and vertigo.
Skipping the gym today, with too much grill biz to catch up on.
Happy Weekend, Y'all.

Yes, working sick, and especially with a potentially dangerous disease if you're a disciple of the Orange Shitstain. American exceptionalism!kcdave wrote: ↑Sat Apr 22, 2023 10:57 am New WVH

Most people eventually recover from COVID. Unfortunately there’s no cure for stupid.
Re: Weekend Roll Call 4-22-23
Getting ready for the regular Saturday morning excursion to the farmers market and COSTCO.
Tomorrow we hop on Amtrak in Oceanside heading for Union Station in LA, a two hour trip. They just recently reopened the section between San Clemency and San Juan Capistrano, which has been closed for months due to erosion on the coast.
From Union Station we take the Metro Red Line to Hollywood/Highland from where it’s about a block to the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel where the first Academy Awards were presented (1927 I think). Going to a jazz club close by (Catalina Bar and Grill on Sunset Boulevard) to see Omar Sosa and Seckou Keira tomorrow night. Back home on Monday by the same route.
The hotel is basically across the street from the Chinese Theater so we may spend some time in the afternoon walking up and down Hollywood Boulevard, something I’ve never done nor really had a desire to do, but it should be interesting.

Today’s haul from the Vista Farmers Market.
It was 82 degrees here at 10:30 am. Seems like we skipped spring and jumped straight into summer.

Probably closer to $80. The bread was $19.50 and the microgreens $10. I actually got the strawberries at a roadside farm stand on the way down there. They were only $7 for three baskets (1/4 of a flat). At the FM you pay twice that much for about half as many. I also got the romaine there for $0.75 and two large avocados for $1.50 each. They don’t have to pay for a space at the courthouse parking lot.
At least I didn’t use SNAP, so you all aren’t subsidizing my supplemental nutrition.

Made some sparrows homeless by destroying the nest they were building under our eaves, watched the Suns go up 3-1, gearing up for tunight's edition of the 'Town. Good one in store for tonight. Missing it should get you banned from wrestling.

I probably underestimated the asparagus and tomatoes.
Re: Weekend Roll Call 4-22-23
Asparagus was $4.00 for the bunch. The farm that it’s from is in Linden, up near Modesto. He usually has apples, citrus, stone fruit, nuts and grapes depending on the season. Bought some of his asparagus last week and grilled it (very thick spears) and it was seriously the best asparagus I’ve ever tasted. I mentioned it today and the guy (looks like an old hippie and is always playing classic rock in his van) said that they take their asparagus very seriously in that area with, like, asparagus festivals and stuff. Kin of like avocados here I guess the avocado festival in Fallbrook is tomorrow). Knowing that I will probably be buying it every week while he has it. Everything we get in the supermarket is from Mexico.
Tomatoes are generally $4 per pound. The cherry tomatoes were $3 per basket and I got two baskets.

Re: Weekend Roll Call 4-22-23
Yeah Farmington/Oakdale area is big asparagus country. There is a killer cheese shop up in Oakdale that has some great stuff from their cheese obviously to all kinds of asparagus stuff. Big fan of the spicy pickled ones. The big festival is in Stockton which is a fuckin dump so I have never been. SLO is mostly Strawberry festivals which are yum. I grew asparagus in Jackson which isn’t too far from there and it thrived. Have you ever planted it?
Re: Weekend Roll Call 4-22-23
Nope we haven't grown much stuff that isn't on trees. I plan on putting in a bunch of raised beds in later this year.
A lot of strawberries around here too. Seems like they get two or three crops each year.

The real criminals are companies that package sick days and vacation into the same PTO pool. Complete bullshit and screwing employees.

You should not be working around other people if you have any communicable disease. Covid or a common cold. Common courtesy and respect for your fellow workers. But dumbasses like you don’t get that kind of logic.

Willfully spreading a communicable disease is a crime in many states, including CA (H&S Code 120290).Mikey wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2023 4:10 pmIf I was working in an office and you knowingly came in with Covid you would probably go home with a broken nose.Sven Golly wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2023 2:00 pm You did the right thing kcdave. Different strokes, different folks. As I mentioned in my initial post,Mikey wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2023 4:10 pmIf I was working in an office and you knowingly came in with Covid you would probably go home with a broken nose.

company ownership does not look favorably upon those that use
sick time. ESPECIALLY MANAGEMENT such as myself. It's a get
your ass to work no matter what type of philosophy. I have called in
sick twice in 15 years. There were likely another 10 days or so that I would
have liked to have called in, but you know what? I toughed it out and
made it through those days and still live to tell about it.
I was lucky enough to get covid the first time in late 2019 before it became
a thing. This time I got it after all the over the top rules and restrictions
have expired. If I would have gotten it during that time, I would not have tested
for it and been subjected to being forced to stay home. FUCK THAT.
If I can get my ass out of bed and go to work ... I'm going. That would
include working w/ a broken nose. It would not stop me. However, you
or anyone else dealing out broken noses would be fired and looking for
your next job after you were released from jail.

Re: Weekend Roll Call 4-22-23
Sorry but that’s just ridiculous on so many levels. If that’s the kind of place you want to work then “different strokes” I guess. But I’ll bet that kind of policy is illegal even in flyover country. I’ll leave it at that.
Re: Weekend Roll Call 4-22-23
With a little extra Google time I find that I actually am wrong on this in most cases. It would depend on any written policy as part of one’s employment agreement. But it still seems ridiculous to provide sick leave and not allow, in fact encourage, employees to stay home if they are sick, especially if they could infect others. Your productivity suffers when you’re sick and if you spread it around it affects the rest of the crew. Why would management encourage that - just to show how tough you are? Really monumentality stupid policy but I guess it must work for some. Why would you even provide sick leave if you can’t use it?

Re: Weekend Roll Call 4-22-23
My guess, and it'll likely differ among employers, is that sick leave use policy is often written in such a way as to try to discourage its abuse rather than to make legitimately sick employees show up at work. The pendulum swings both ways; some people come in to work when they're sick and shoulda stayed home, others regularly call in sick just because. The latter group is typically the intended audience for what may seem restrictive sick use policy verbiage.
Just my guess.
