Behave like Christians

Post by Meat Head »

SouthernBaptist Conference President Bart Barber recently counciled his flock to "behave like Christians" and continue to not allow women to serve as pastors.

https://apnews.com/article/southern-bap ... 1316af12b1

"the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, whose statement of faith asserts that only qualified men can serve as pastors."

I wonder how they handle trans folks showing up.

Would be quite a scene to take in when a trans person strolled in to a Baptist church.

I wrote a paper on this issue about five years ago.

It is an interesting topic.

I think Barber's version of Christianity won't last much longer than the old guys who are running things now. Maybe one more generation, tops.

About time.

Softball, do tell. Sounds interesting.

I couldn't give a shit less one way or the other about tranny's. But I find it damn funny how all these christian nationalist fucks get all freaked out by the tranny's. They get all high and mighty, claiming they are harming their kids and have mental disorders .... blah blah blah! Meanwhile the news has stories daily of some religious fuck diddling kids. They are also the same religious fucks that think they can talk to some invisible guy that lives in a cloud who controls every aspect of the universe. Who really has the mental disorder?

Baptists are very unified on one issue, baptism.
They believe that only believers should be baptized. No infant baptism.
When it comes to other doctrines, Baptists hold a pretty wide array of views.

Among Baptists, the issue of female pastors has been very divisive.
There are many who are adamant that only men are to be pastors, and there are a handful of passages that are cited to back this view.

1Corinthians 11:3-12
1Corinthians 14:34-40
1Timothy 2:11-15
Some others, also.

When it comes to making the argument for keeping women out of the office of pastor, 1Timothy2:11-15 is probably the most compelling passage that is used.
The reason it is compelling is because Paul brings it back to God's creation of humankind.
Paul notes that God created man first, and it was the woman who was deceived by Satan.
Therefore, "a woman should not teach, nor usurp authority over the man, but remain silent."

My view is that Paul, in both Corinthians letters, and in both Timothy letters, was seeking to have the believers be in happy harmony under Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church.
Paul wanted the believers to keep unity and order in the church, and part of the order in those times and places involved recognizing the cultural norm that women are to be subordinate to men.
A woman should not "usurp authority" over a man.

It might appear that Paul, by hearkening back to the creation of man and woman, and noting that it was the woman who was deceived, was saying there is something different, fundamentally and universally, about a woman that makes her weak, or unsuitable for the office of pastor.
However, the case is made by those who think having female pastors is okay, that Paul was not making a universal statement about the unsuitability of women, but was instead just using the example of Eve (who was created after Adam, and as a helper for him - Gen. 2:18) being deceived by Satan, to bolster his assertion that women in Ephesus at that time should respect the cultural norm and remain subordinate to men.
Eve, a "helper," stepped out of her lane, fell, and also gave the forbidden fruit to Adam.

"Usurp" means illegally, or by force.
I don't think a woman being a pastor is her "usurping authority" over men.
If a woman does usurp authority over a man, and she then takes a position where she is teaching and leading in a church, I would not be in favor of that.

Both men and woman are in God's image, and both have authority to rule and subdue the earth (Genesis 1:27-28).

So long story short, it is okay, imo, if a woman is a pastor.

That was a great band. I saw them many times at many venues, including the Belly Up. Also La Paloma and UCSD. Other great local North County bands in the day were Rosie and the Screamers and Joe Bummer and the Asswipes from Hell. Also Jack Tempchin, who wrote a bunch of songs for the Eagles. Rosie Flores eventually moved on to Austin and became a pretty big name with the Alt-Country and Rockabilly crowd.

I haven't actually been to the Belly Up in decades but back in the day I saw some pretty good acts there, including Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker and Lightnin' Hopkins.

I'll have to check that out. She used to play all around the local scene in the 70s, and I hadn't heard anything about her until maybe 15 years ago when I tried a Google search. Good to know that she was still doing it because she was great way back then.

Just more reasons for me to loathe organized religion.

And religion in general for that matter.

You have to be pretty shallow to loathe religion in general. You probably mean religious people or what religion does to people or something like that because the actual texts of most religions is very insightful and humanizing, if you know what it’s trying to say.

1Timothy 2:11 wow that is some dangerous stuff to toss around.

Next Bible question I have, you get the call.

Wow, the blind squirrel finds a nut.

I categorize myself as an extremely doubtful agnostic, regarding the actual existence of g0d.

That being said, I appreciate the importance of religion as a guidebook for people to lead good lives.

If you want to hear someone who can state this better than anyone else, listen to Jordan Peterson's take on religion. When asked whether or not he thinks g0d exists, he answers that he behaves as if he does and that whether or not it is nothing more than a bunch of stories written by people thousands of years ago, isn't important. Reading and understanding the stories is important and that when you ignore all that religious gobbledegook, you get something like China during the cultural revolution.

As for any organization's guidelines regarding whom them pick to serve as pastors, my answer is, it's their fukking organization, let them make their rules. None of my fukking business. Live and let live.

Is there any wisdom in picking men?

One could argue that men, on average are more rational and women more emotional and therefore it is a roll better served by men. But, that doesn't mean that a woman couldn't be an excellent pastor or that a man couldn't be a really shitty one. If I ever decide to start a church, I think I will allow woman pastors, so long as they have nice titties.

JP is a stupid cunt. So don’t take Dumbaholic’s advice on this subject.
Or the subject of having women pastors just to be able to sexually objectify them.
Every one of your posts is a clinic in bigotry, misogyny and stupidity.
