A MODERN DAY MONSTER!!

Image

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/ ... 82013.html

Mysterious disappearances of livestock around a South Florida lake may finally come to an end, after a Mississippi man says he killed what amounts to a modern day monster.
Professional hunting guide Doug Borries reports he shot a 13-foot, 4-inch alligator in the lake and it weighed 905 pounds, according to a Jan. 20 Facebook post.
The alligator was killed in the fall “on private property” — with the owner’s permission — near the city of Okeechobee in Okeechobee County, he told McClatchy News.
“I had no idea the magnitude of how big his body was until we pulled him completely out of the lake,” said Borries.
Photos show the reptile was nearly three times his height, including the tail. “An absolute beast,” he wrote on Facebook.
The alligator was believed to be about 80 years old, he said.

Article said it was taking livestock. That is a nuisance.

I am not about killing for the killing, but harvesting a nuisance gator when they are in no way endangered is fine.

Fried gator is outstanding. You don't have to eat it just because you belong to a certain cultural group. But I will admit the Cajuns would likely make the best variety of tasty dishes from it.

I’ve ridden a 12’ Jon boat next to several gators in the Okefenokee Swamp that were 1-2’ longer than the boat. Seen probably 2-3 on the Ocmulgee River (goes through Macon) that were probably at least that big. Lotta HUGE fucking gators here in GA..
It is possible that the local weather has a factor in the size of gators.

You would think, harsher conditions mean less to eat and therefore smaller critters, but what it actually means is that scrawny ones can't survive an extended cold snap, which you can have in your neck of the woods, but not in Okeechobee. If you want to see another example look at the white tail deer in Tennessee vs the monsters you find in Northern Maine. TN white tails are typically 100 lbs. In Maine they can run 250 or better. Small ones just don't make it through hard winters.

I’m thinking it might have something to do with genetics. But then you have to believe in that sort of thing for it to make sense.

It's always a drag when your doggo or grandmother gets hauled into the pond by a huge gator, but the real threat to Florida is the freakish giant snakes--a hybrid of Burmese python and an Indian rock python. These monsters were loosed by irresponsible idiots and have no natural predators and breed like joqqers. Already all sorts of animals are threatened, including deer, raccoons and everything smaller than a Buick.

Honestly don't think it tastes anything like chicken.

I prefer it ground, mixed with ground pork and fat back, garlic, white & black pepper, cayenne, summer savory, marjoram and white wine. Case it, poach it and grill it over a wood fire.

OK, smartass, tell us how biology works then.

A severe climate means scrawny fukks don't make it through the winter so they don't breed. It is simple evolutionary pressure. It is why northern Maine has big white tails and the south has lots of small ones. No reason why they wouldn't produce the occasional trophy sized one though.

Another good example would be Polar or Grizzly Bears. They are big for a reason.

Of course it has to do with genes.

The question is why do these genes exist?

The genes exist because they were best suited to a particular environment. If a 100 buck or alligator for that matter, can thrive in an environment, they will pass their genes on to the next generation. They might even out compete larger animals as they can get by on less food. But in an environment where smaller examples freeze to deaf, you end up with big ones.
