Bench clearing... brawl?
This happened in tonight's Mets vs. Diamondbacks game...
Well, nothing happened.
Such is, more often than not, the case these days.
Baseball brawls don't happen often, and when they do, they are generally much more tame than what was seen 25, 35, 45 years ago.
Pull up some Youtube videos of brawls in the past, and you seen some SERIOUS mayhem, rage, and fighting.
Compare them with brawls from recent times.
My theory for this is that these days the players feel much less allegiance to their own team.
They are much more preoccupied by the thought of gaining their next contract.
They don't have any inclination toward getting their nose broken in one of these incidents -- for the sake of the uniform they are currently wearing.
So these days the players just trot out there into a scrum and act as if they are p1ssed off.
But punches are not thrown that often.

Re: Bench clearing... brawl?
Guys don't want to risk getting sucker punched and seriously injured in brawls anymore. Used to happen rather frequently, a guy who's just in the scrum to break up a fight or protect a teammate ends of getting sucker punched or blindsided and got really hurt.
Good call, though. I'd love to read some real reporting on this topic.

pop, you nailed it with the allegiance factor. Since the advent of free agency, everything has changed. Hell, they know the guys in the other dugout could be their teammates in a year.
Not that brawls should be encouraged, but it’s sad that most players feel no obligation to stand up for their team or teammates.
You can probably count the guys on one hand who have played their entire career with one team in the last 30 years.

Free agency has nothing to do with it. Baseball has had free agency for 50 years and just only in the last few years has the ferocity of brawls fallen off. Guys are much more concerned about getting seriously hurt. Plus I think MLB has really cracked down on brawls, they were getting crazy.Booger wrote: ↑Fri Jul 07, 2023 12:57 pm pop, you nailed it with the allegiance factor. I think the constant movement of players has something to do with it, but yeah, the ridiculous amounts of money these guys are making is the main factor. Neither they nor management wants anyone getting injured.
Of course, the big bucks did start with free agency.

Did I say I hated it?
I’m glad the players get paid well.

Re: Bench clearing... brawl?
Regarding the subject "brawl," the home plate umpire somewhat initiated it, although he may have been well-intentioned. Dude (Alvarez) who got hit had clubbed 3 dingers in the series and was subsequently plunked by a fellow Venezuelan (Ruiz). Alvarez made no move toward the mound after being hit, and Ruiz made no move nor said anything to Alvarez. The ump, having worked the whole series and knowing that Alvarez had punked the D'backs throughout it, stepped in front of him to keep him from charging the mound, which it appeared Alvarez had no intention of doing - he was heading toward first. It was the ump's action that led to the bench clearing; had he done nothing, it would have simply been next batter up.

Run out of the dugout to stand on the base lines! That'll show 'em!
Shut up, Randy!

In high school I took a class on the law taught by an assistant football/baseball coach. During the class he showed a film on violence that included a clip of a brawl invoolving the Stankees. In the middle of it he exclaimed, "that's my brother!"Softball Bat wrote: ↑Thu Jul 13, 2023 5:45 am Baseball in 1977...

I get the feeling Ramirez & Anderson won't be exchanging Christmas cards, though.

Tim Anderson is a racist piece of shit. It was nice to see him go straight tomato can. He squared up nicely at first but then delivered an anemic right that looked like a cross between Barack Obama and Anthony Fauci throwing out a first pitch.

You use that word so much it’s lost all its meaning.
