Shipman claimed he didn’t take part in the fighting and wanted to stop it because he knew it was wrong to attack the dock worker, video of the incident appears to show him punching the dock worker repeatedly while he was on the ground. I was surprised that the Selma to Montgomery trip is 52 miles. Somehow I thought they walked way less. The signs along the road that show where they camped and whatnot were very interesting. Mostly crap about which racist POS didn’t want them staying on their land for a night. Montgomery has a Capybara at their zoo plus Rosa Parks and Freedom Riders museums so it’s not all bad, but yeah Selma is the bridge to take a pic and leave. Walmart on the edge of town didn’t help the DT I’m sure.

You’ve made that drive. Interesting. The historical markers do tell a fascinating story. I assume the Viola Liuzo (spelling?) marker is still there.

Parts of that stretch of road are beautiful rolling farmland, but too much of it is nasty neglected property.

I used to enjoy riding my motorcycle on back roads (Hwy 14) to Selma to photograph the beautiful churches and homes. There’s an old moss-draped cemetery that had a monument to Nathan Bedford Forrest…lotsa turmoil over that for many years.

But Selma has deteriorated badly. Very dangerous and very dilapidated these days.

Liuzzo, but yeah it’s still there. Her name is also on the Maya Lin piece (the lady who also did the Vietnam Vet wall in DC) in Montgomery. I had never learned of her till we went to Alabama, so yeah travel is good.
