Weekend Roll Call 6-22-24

Post by kcdave »

Apologies if this is glass deek .... but I have not seen
it if so ......... and if it's not, how the fuck has this
gal not been worthy of discussion this week?

Summer is here, which means my balls will be
clackers between my knee caps for the next 3 mos.
Heat and high dew points will be wearing my ass down.
Some grill biz this morning, and heading down to the
city to empty out a couple of storage units.
HPG and the .net brethren may remember that my wifes
step dad passed away a few years ago. Well, 2 weeks ago
ago her father passed. Going through paperwork, she discovered
he has 2 storage units racking up $125 each monthly in fees.
She found keys to one, but not the other. The one that we
have been in, was a complete waste of money monthly with
crap that should have been sold or trashed. The other unit
supposedly contains some sort of boat. We will be going down
this afternoon and I will cut the lock off, as both need to be
empty by the end of the month to avoid more fees. News at 11.

No meme this week, as I am Hawk Tua'd out.

Anyone seen d-town lately?

Happy Weekend, Y'all.

There's 2:22 I'll never get back. A crappy meme would have sufficed.

That's a summary of board traffic this week.

Looking forward to chillin' in Tune Town tonight!!

Waking up with continued neck problems, it has been more than two weeks now. Sprained neck with a pinched nerve, and thankfully the nerve part got better when my neck finally popped a couple of days ago. I have dry needling to look forward to next week, whatever just please fix it.

Going to get a haircut, a short one as we're headed to the Yucatán on Friday. I pack everything I need, including dog food and some kitchen supplies, into one suitcase. But we'll be bringing 6 maybe 7 suitcases because family and friends will order stuff that they can't get in Yucatán, and have it delivered to our house. Makes for a bit of a challenge checking in at the airport but hey it is worth it. Really looking forward to the trip, I'm sure I'll post a few pics along the way.

When I get there, they want me to cook and I want them to cook, the food there is phenomenal. But they don't get cajun and creole food except when I make it. Been thinking about shrimp etouffee, crab and brie soup, and of course gumbo. Yes, I realize that crab and brie soup isn't cajun or creole, but close enough. We'll be there for July 4th, so I'll probably be doing a bunch of hot dogs and burgers that day as well. The thing is to have a bunch of different options, especially a lot of caramelized onions and sauted mushrooms, but y'all know that.

My oldest daughter finished her residency in pharmacy this week, and has already been hired by a hospital making more than I ever have in my life. She also wrote some paper that was reviewed at Harvard, and it will be published. She tried to explain it to me, but of course I couldn't understand it.

Football is on the horizon. Ah, just had two little dogs jump on me, their way of telling me it is time for their morning walk. Ok, y'all have a good one.

Since Dave left us in limbo for music, I offer the great Tornado Rider and the only song I’m aware of that incorporates ‘cormorant’ in the lyrics.

Why do I not see the fuckin’ video? Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Shit.

Heading out this afternoon (and tomorrow) to the San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival with Mrs. Mikey, our daughter and my son’s mother in law. Not a huge fan of “smooth jazz” (more of a traditional and/or fusion aficionado) but it should be fun. A few artists I’m really looking forward to are Gregory Porter and Spyro Gyra (I was a big fan in the 80s). Beautiful venue (the Rady Shell) downtown right by the bay and a few hundred yards from Petco Park.

You have to use the direct youtube link that shows up on desktop mode, not the one that is default when you use your phone. Put that link in the youtube3 brackets and you'll have it

My kids are in Hawaii for the next week. They're swimming in their first ever open-water race today. 1.2 miles. The mama waiting at home is fine, just fine. No, really, I'm fine. I think they'll do great! The husband and I are temporary empty-nesters and will be going out for a nice afternoon hike and then having dinner someplace fun.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

1.2 mile swim is the half-Ironman distance, that's outstanding. I did quite a few open water swims before my body decided to fall apart. In every race, there was a huge amount of safety and support personnel, they will do great. Since this is their first open water swim, I would encourage them to look up and find the boundaries more often than they are used to doing. People new to open water swims tend to zig zag instead of going in a straight line. Please give us an update after the race.

Thanks for asking, they did great!! As of right now, both are top three in their division, but some results are missing. Super proud of them! My son swam a low 24 minute and my daughter swam a mid 29.

That’s cool. They must be having a great time over there. You should be very proud of them. It takes a whole lot of dedication and work to be able to even compete.

My sister used to be a big open water swimmer. She won her age group several times in the La Jolla Rough Water Swim, which is four miles (I think they call it the La Jolla Cove Swim now).

FOUR. MILES.
No thank you!! :)

Our team does an Open Water meet every year in September/October, my kids just haven't done it yet. A couple years ago the team went to La Jolla. They really liked it there, but I think they like Hawaii more -- one of the swimmers saw a dolphin, another some turtles, etc. I'm sure it makes the swim a lot more interesting!

She was a fanatic, for a time she coached her masters team in Park City. My brother was also a competitive swimmer and waterpolo player. I could never keep up and dropped out of swimming when I was about 12.

The water is a lot warmer in Hawaii. Even in September here you’re lucky if it’s above 70.

About ready for this heat wave to be over. 90+ every day. Yeah, I get it SS- that's nothing for you. A week of it up here in the 'burgh sucks for us though. I've got yardwork piling up that I just don't want to get to in this heat. So today, so far I have done absolutely nothing other than sitting in the AC and relaxing. Oh wait, I replaced the water in the bird bath, so there's that.

Yesterday, had my first wagyu beef. Had to visit a customer the other day in the amish country of Ohio and on the way back stopped at Whitefeather Meats. They have a pretty good social media presence as The Bearded Butchers. I've always wanted to visit their retail store and this customer visit allowed me the opportunity to do so on my drive back. I soooo wanted to purchase so many items, but it can get quite expensive as you may guess. Inside, it was a veritable amusement park of meats... You want some Ostrich? Sure, we've got it. Elk loin? Sure, we've got it. Offal? Sure, we've got it. Bison? Sure, we've got it. Venison, Alligator, etc, we've got it. I ended up just getting a wagyu NY Strip for myself. Was quite tempted to get a wagyu ribeye, but at $76 for a 12oz, I couldn't justify it.

Anyways, grilled that NY strip to medium rare last night. I was ready for a good experience, but I had NO idea it would be that good. So tender. So rich. Over the moon delicious. A 12 oz NY strip for $55 was worth it, at least for this one time.

Tomorrow a cold front is moving through and expecting t-storms. Thankfully, will end the heat wave but will not allow for yardwork.

In the late 70's/early 80's the La Jolla Rough Water Swim was always 1 mile, which I did 3 times. Additionally they had a 3 mile competition in (IIRC) '82 (which I swam in as well.

The best part of the LJRWS was always the start. This is the small beach from which the swim starts:

Image

Imagine a start of around 50 swimmers taking off at one time (with hundreds of competitors they have people start at intervals). The only way that I can describe the first 100 yards is it being like being in a rugby match in a washing machine.

Image

The backside of the course was the furthest out into the ocean, passing fields of kelp. This part was slightly unnerving, as a friend of my dad's had been killed by a GWS about half a mile south of there.

The semi-funny part of that is when I went to the beach for pleasure I always went to 19th Street in Del Mar. For those who didn't hear, a guy was attacked by a shark at 17th Street about 3 weeks ago.

Super cool!! I didn't know how my kids would handle the start, since they've never had to deal with that mess before. There were over 400 swimmers! Apparently they did okay! My son wound up 3rd overall for men (not just age group) and my daughter wound up 2nd for 13/14 girls! SO FUN. I'm thinking they're going to want to go on the open water trip this fall... which just means they get to go on MORE trips without the mama.

I've already told Mr. ppanther we're chaperoning the next Hawaii trip, for sure. Staying home while they're eating all the good pineapple is just not okay.

I was doing several triathlons a year, definitely not fast, but I was having fun. So a good friend of mine decided to do his first tri with me, Sportspectrum near Shreveport. It is a large, well-established race, and every year there are quite a few fast athletes in it.

Again, I was never fast, and learned early on to start in the back of the pack and let it clear out. I told my friend this and encouraged him to do the same.

However, my friend thought he was a fast swimmer, so he started at the front. Race starts, and with his adrenaline pushing him, he actually led the race.

Yeah, he led the race for about 200 yards. Then he hit the wall, couldn't breathe, could barely stay afloat. Several hundred other racers didn't give a shit and just swam right over him. He got all sorts of bruises and claw marks, and a lesson learned. This was maybe 30 years ago, and I still laugh when I think about it.

I had similar experiences in the triathlons I competed in (first one was in 2000 and last one was in 2004). I was never going to win one. I just liked to be able to complete the Olympic distance ones in under 3 hours. I eventually got wise and started on the outside edge, and waited about 15 seconds after entering the water before I started on my way. By then, the crazies had blazed ahead and it wasn't that bad. And 15 seconds was never going to hurt my time as much as getting kicked and clawed hurt.

Bingo.

Not only that, but also letting someone else lead (& thus have to do the navigation via lifting your head completely out of the water - and thus exerting themselves while you just follow their lead) allows you to pour it on while others are feeling that piano fall on their back.

Mikey;
It just struck me that the LJ Cove is now a haul-area for harbor seals. Since they're protected by the Marine Mammals Protection Act of 1971 have they had to move the starting location?

I was a HUGE Spyro Gyra fan too. I went to college at the University of Buffalo, where Jay Beckenstein attended. That band owned Western NY during the 80's. Gamalon came out of the Buffalo jazz fusion scene as well. Great stuff.

We had a great time at the San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival on Saturday and Sunday. The show lasted from 3:00 pm until about 10:00 pm both days. Not only was the music great, but the venue and the weather couldn't have been better. Yesterday it was 99 deg at my house at noon but downtown by the bay (about 60 min from here) it was low 80s at 3:00 pm and still comfortable in shorts when the show ended. Plus we were in the shade in the front row so no sunburn.

Can't ask for a nicer location and venue.

As an added extra bonus we got some fireworks from up the coast at Vandenberg. I think that this was a SpaceX Launch.

I was a HUGE Spyro Gyra fan too. I went to college at the University of Buffalo, where Jay Beckenstein attended. That band owned Western NY during the 80's. Gamalon came out of the Buffalo jazz fusion scene as well. Great stuff.
I think he's the only one left from the original group. Still going strong, though.
