Probably a stupid question, but does Biden need to be nominated to run for another election? Or as the President or leader of the Democrats can he just say, I'm running and that's that?

Only once, has a party not nominated a sitting president, in 1852, and that was democrat Franklin Pierce who failed to receive his party's nomination.

So it's highly unlikely to happen now. But who knows?

Yes, in order to represent the D or R party one must receive their party's nomination. And there's no legal obligation to nominate a sitting president.

That said, one has to consider how much of a campaign advantage a sitting POTUS has before going with someone else. The optics of AF1 or their motorcade are things campaign contributions can't buy.
