Current Scene

Post by Sudden Sam »

I’m sitting in an old BBQ restaurant in a very small Alabama town. Eating a great meat and 3 dinner chatting up the young waitress who no doubt is beginning to worry about getting to her car tonight. I’ll put her at ease in a minute.

Looking around I see a mixed race baby whose mom is waiting tables. Older white couple is playing with her. Young black guy at counter laughing with old redneck logger looking dude. Tables of blacks, whites and Hispanics chatting amongst themselves.

This is typical of what I see daily here. You fuckers who like to feel superior insofar as race relations can kiss my ass. We’ve had this shit figured out for a good while. Treat everybody the same. Respect one another. Just be REAL.

Nah, man. I’m good. Cold as ice. Hard-hearted as ever. Wish nothing but pain on minorities, queens, etc.

Being in the south in 1960 was an eye opener for me.

Even though the US Army was integrated. I was stationed at Fort Gordon GA. there were no "black" officers or NCO's. When we went to Augusta to go boozing and whoring, the blacks had to go to bars in their part of town.

About 25 years ago a guy I used to know from HS & was working as a PGA Tour rep for a golf club company told me that, in esssence, not much had changed around Augusta.

I was in first grade in ‘60. But I clearly recall noticing how my dad treated blacks differently. Seemed odd even to a little guy. Dad was from northern Ohio and was super prejudiced. I never understood it, but that’s the way it was.

Still hard to imagine things were the way you described. But it truly was a different world back then. Musta blown your mind being from NY!

Edited for statistical accuracy.

Never heard the "meat and 3" phrase before. Had to use the Google to figure out what Sam was talking about. Sounds delicious.

I can get a little chatty with pretty ladies. I used to be charming and entertaining. I’m old now so it’s just creepy.

I fell in love at the age of 14 while watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Not with Newman or Redford...

Definitely not Woodcock. That would be more Swan Gollum's speed.
