straight out of 1984??
How Columbus Day, celebrating the initial voyages from Europe to the Americas has morphed into "Indigenous People's Day".
What kind of world we would have had if Columbus didn't make his voyages ??

For sure without Columbus landing on Plymouth Rock and trading beads with the savages on Manhattan Island on his way to finding the Northwest Passage to India, America would never have been “discovered.”

As disgusting as the taking of sex slaves (children included) was, that was the norm then (as it is on some continents today). It went on everywhere. There was nothing unique or out of the ordinary in Columbus’ behavior. Asians and Africans made Columbus look like a good guy.

I’m actually more offended by the pink T-Mobile commercials making a mockery of Holiday Road.
Re: straight out of 1984??
They weren't indigenous, they had migrated from asia. And Chris was just one of a cabal of rapist, enslaving, thieving, and torturing colonizers. And Chris came a long time before George and Ben, so being patriotic about Columbus Day is just indoctrination.Screw_Michigan wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 12:21 amI don't know. Hmm... your post makes me wonder which religious movement ended slavery in most of the world.Sudden Sam wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 12:38 am As disgusting as the taking of sex slaves (children included) was, that was the norm then (as it is on some continents today). The indigenous people were really bad at fighting anyone other than themselves. They had home field advantage and overwhelming numerical advantages, but got smoked. I recently read Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian. It definitely wasn’t because of a lack of savagery on either side.
Re: straight out of 1984??
I finished that book a couple of months ago. It’s supposed to be the author’s “magnum opus” and one of the greatest American novels. Kind of a difficult read in terms of both style and substance, and I kept asking myself why am I reading this. But I did finish.
I read “The Road” maybe 15 years ago. Much easier going.

I had exactly the same experience. And I read it about the same time as you. I bet we read the same article (in the Atlantic, I think) and were motivated to see what all the hubbub was about.Mikey wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 2:58 am I finished that book a couple of months ago. I had so much difficulty with his writing style and characters rolling in and out that I had to keep a notepad handy to refresh what and who I was reading about.
The thing that pissed me off the most about the book was that the asshole who wrote the introduction gave away the ending before I read the book. I was so pissed I almost didn’t read it. It was a chore.
I’m reading The Barn by Wright Thompson now. It is about the murder of Emmett Till. I’m only about a third of the way through the book so far. It is an easier read, by far. But very disturbing, which I guess is the point. I’ve never seen racism like that in my lifetime, thank FSM.

That's a joke, right? No way that really happened. Why kill a squirrel and a racoon?
Re: straight out of 1984??
They're vermin, clearly you've never had a problem with them. I am in solidarity with this anti-squirrel/raccoon police state, build little railroads for their trip to mini concentration camps.

This is what happens when you elect Democrats. They eventually show up to kill your pets. Gotta reduce that squirrel's carbon footprint to save the planet.

Saw the movie "Till." Very disturbing flick and definitely a sad chapter in our history.88BuckeyeGrad wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 1:42 amI’m reading The Barn by Wright Thompson now. It is about the murder of Emmett Till.

Unquestionably. The book is detailed. I have thought of you many times while reading it. There are many, many references in the book to musicians who came from the delta.Smackie Chan wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2024 5:49 amSaw the movie "Till." It is as I understood it was. Jim Crow and the prior racial segregation was awful, though no one I know in my generation has ever experienced it. Maybe Roux or others who lived in the Southern Democrat Deep South can share some personal experiences.
