Day 1 hits and misses

Post by Left Seater »

Lots of Executive Orders on Day 1, which seems to be the new normal. Apparently so are blanket pardons even for those not yet convicted crimes. But of the EOs there were some hits and misses.

Hits:

Immigration- Ending the CBP One app usage for asylum appointments, remain in Mexico reinstated, declaring a National Emergency and declaring drug gangs terrorist organizations.

Paris Climate Accord - Withdrew completely. Until such time as China and India are held to the same standards as the other parties, we had no business being part of accord.

EV mandates - Removing these mandates is a win for consumers. We as citizens should have a choice regarding the vehicles we want to purchase. Now he needs to work to remove the EV tax credits. Without government support, the EV market is smaller and it can right size.

Return to work - Forcing non union employees back into the office should cause a good number of them to choose to leave. This is a win for citizen tax payers. There are plenty of stories out there where federal employees have said they will leave if forced to return to the office. Great. A smaller government is better for all of us.

Ending Federal DEI Policies - The way to fix something isn’t to just do the opposite.

Declaring there are two sexes / genders - Common sense that is long past due. The courts will help cement this as well. But when things like Title 9 specifically mention sex, you can’t redefine sex to be whatever you want it to be.

Misses:

Renaming the Gulf of Mexico - Seriously?

Renaming McKinley - Seriously?

Withdrawal from the WHO - I think we should have serious reduced our funding to levels other contemporary nations provide. In the last budget cycle we contributed 18% of the total WHO budget. This is by far the largest government contributor. We should have reduced out contribution down to 4% which would still make us the leading country in terms of donations.

Wathdrawl from the world taxing agreement - While I agree taxes should be reduced, this needed more time to negotiate. Many US companies aren’t on a level playing field with their international counterparts, but pulling out may lead to Europe charging additional taxes to US companies selling products overseas.

Tariffs against CAN & MEX start February 1st. Care to explain how that will help with inflation (especially eggs)?

The felon also increased costs for prescription drugs for millions of Americans.

We'll soon hear how that is the fault of the Democrats, of course.

And no, you fucking felon, you can't change the 14th Amendment with an Executive Order.

What were the EV "mandates?"

Would that by any chance include Ellen Musk's dinners at Mar en Lago?

The biggest was freezing any unspent funds from the $5 billion charging station. Lots of reports of this slush fund only producing 7 or 11 or 19 charging stations after multiple years.

He also pulled down Biden's 50% of all new cars sold by 2030 be electric goal.

Now he needs to work to eliminate the tax credit for new EVs.

We should all object to $5 Billion for charging stations. Should the Feds also spend $5 Billion to offset the cost of building gas stations?

The rental car companies purchase and rapid off load of EVs should be a tell on where we are on EV adoption. Take away the tax breaks and all handouts for infrastructure and EVs look even worse to the majority of drivers.

Wow. Even though I stated that I see why you would object, you still want to argue about it?

Ok, I'll go one round.

Should the Feds also spend an estimated $1 trillion per year subsidizing the fossil fuel industry?

So you don't object to the Feds spending your money to place charging stations?

Or better yet, you don't object to the Feds apparently wasting a ton of money?

And to answer your question, no I am not a fan of subsidies to oil companies. I would love to see our spending greatly reduced and this includes subsidies of all kinds. We should also simplify the tax code and remove offsets and deductions from both businesses and individuals which many add to subsidy totals. But our biggest issue is we have a spending problem and very few of our elected officials on either side want to deal with it.

From what I understand, the planet is 42 Billion times more inclusive, equitable, diverse, and sustainable. If the people signing executive orders for Biden had spent another $42B connecting nobody to the internet, we could have cooled this place down and roux wouldn't be hot tubbing in the snow right now!

Not sure about the Gulf of Mexico. In my atlas, I cross out all the names with a sharpie and write 'Phibesland' but no one pays any attention.
