...but the Tigers have finally played their way out of wild card contention.

I give them tons of credit for playing the first 100 games at .500 and staying within a handful of games of postseason contention throughout. However, the roadtrip out west this week has proven that they still have a little ways to go before they want to contend with the rest of the AL powers.

They sit seven games back of the wild card and tomorrow they face a sweep at the hands of the A's and the possibility of going 1-5 on the trip. At this point, I think finishing .500 would be a nice accomplishment but with the deadline coming up tomorrow, I think they should unload a couple veteran guys for some more young talent and look towards free agency next year for some help in the rotation. It's been a solid ride up to this point but this was a make-or-break road trip and they just haven't answered the bell.

I know all of you here don't give a rip about the Tigers but I've had this quiet confidence and hope that this team was actually capable of making the wild card this year but the way they've performed this week is showing me that I was being a little too ambitious. This team just doesn't know how to win when they have to. I'm finally acknowledging the fact that they are still atleast a year away from contending. Even if they stay within 5-10 games of the wild card, I just can't see them making that key push in these final two months to get them over the hump.

How many games you think Pudge will get for his meltdown today?

5?

He'd make good trade bait for a contending team...

He would be good trade bait but there's no way Dombrowski trades him with no catcher waiting in the wings...unless they move Inge back to catcher. If they move anyone, it would probably be White or Young or even Johnson if someone needs a 5th starter. They've got a great core in place and trading Pudge would put them back a few steps. When healthy, they have one of the best lineups in baseball. Ordonez and Chris Shelton have been two of the best hitters in the league this month. If they re-sign Polanco this winter, figure out what they want to do in center field and add another front-end starting pitcher to go with Bonderman, I think they could compete with the White Sox and Twins for the division next year. They've got some great young arms in the minors but they won't help them right away.

They've got to knock this inconsistency crap off though. All season they get up to .500 and then meltdown and drop back a few games...they just haven't been able to sustain a winning record to be a playoff caliber team. Plus they don't beat the teams they're supposed to. Against the Royals, Mariners and Devil Rays, they're probably on .500 against them this year.
Switch a few names and divisions around and your post could easily be talking about the Blue Jays...

The Jays have been one of the big surprises in the league this year. I don't know how they've stayed in the hunt without Halladay. I thought they'd be battling with the Devil Rays for the AL East cellar going into this season.

Right now it's a two-way fight to stay ahead of Tampa, with Toronto
holding the edge over Baltimore. :P

Shoalzie I am of the same opinion. Even if they dont get the wild card this season is already a success. 2 years ago we (yeah, we) were teetering around worst team in history status, now right around .500. the tigers are comin back baby

I don't know...Rodney, German or Dingman would probably be the best bets.

I'm wondering if they're going to go after some bullpen help in the offseason. Percival is damaged goods...just like any other recent big free agent signing for the Tigers. Atleast Ordonez is hitting well but he missed a few months earlier in the year. I'm afraid if they sign a top of the rotation starting pitcher, he'll blow out his rotator cuff or something after a month.

With another loss to Oakland yesterday, that puts them virtually out of the race for good. I'm looking forward to September call-ups...hopefully we'll get to see some of the young stars of the future.

Well, then I first read about the trade last night I was pissed of, but I guess it makes sense. Kyle was probably going to be gone after this season anyways, and if thats all he was worth (because his stock has got to be at its highest right now) then I guess its a good move.

See, im especially annoyed because I liked Farnsworth even as a Cub and ive been in Ottawa all year and not going back home (Windsor) until the end of August so I never even got to see him in a D :(

I plan on going to just about every home game in september (have the whole month off) so I will get to see the future players if they do decide the season is over and start calling them up.

RACK ggyk , I wasn't even thinking about '84. Just refering to the play of the Padres since June 1, combined with their assinine moves over the last week.

If the Tigers were in the NL West...they'd only be a half game out of first. The Padres aren't exactly lighting the world on fire. Plus, the Tigers swept them when they played at Comerica earlier in the season.

That is an understatement, Since June 1, the Padres have the worst fucking record in the entire league, NL and AL.

Rumors are starting to swirl that Pudge is pissed about the Tigers giving up on Farnsworth...he supposedly now wants out. Can you say waivers?

Let's see, they could've kept Farnsworth at risk of losing him to free agency at the end of the year but stayed competitive until the end of the season or they could've traded him away for two B or C level prospects and piss off the entire clubhouse. Looks like TigerFan aren't the only ones mad about this deal.
