i thought it was an interesting film.

some people seem to have hated it with passion.

walked out.

dunno. i've been through some hateful break-ups...which only means they were relationships about love.

some of it made sense to me.

Actually enjoyed it as well. There are certain movie-goers who need a well paved plot to enjoy a movie. So why these people go and see character pieces and then bitch about it afterwards is beyond me.

i think you are right about this: it *was* based on a play and outside the the opening sequence....most of the scenes and cuts are extended in one location....as they would be in "the theatre". Mike Nichols seems to observe the play structure.

and plus, nothing is es'plodin, no terrorist plots, heroes, and no bad guys get drop kicked by hot secret agent chicks in black leather bikinis.

Rented it. There were aspects of the characters that I liked, and there was a certain uniqueness to the movie, but Nichol's taste for long pauses and profound monologues wore on me as the movie went on. I ended up finding something else to do after it was about 3/4's over.

I don't generally watch depressing movies, as I have never really seen the point of paying money to have someone make you feel like shit. Of the downers that I've seen though, that was probably one of the better ones, but it still couldn't keep my interest to the end.

Seriously, though, when I hear "relationships", I think 'chick flick',
and that isn't my style.
I guess you can say I'm not a Mike Nichols fan.
I looked up a list on imdb.com,
and the two I like best are "The Graduate" and "Birdcage".
Haven't seen or paid much attention to most of the others.
When it comes to non-action oriented films, I tend to go for classic films
from the likes of Billy Wilder or Alfred Hitchcock, to name just a couple
well-known directors.
Call me an old fart at heart. :P

A redneck roommate of mine used to like to take his pick 'em up truck to the drive in with a 12-pack, get loaded while watching a movie and DUI has ass back home. One night he was going to see a movie that I wanted to see, so I went with him. We got a case of beer, drove to the drive-in and proceded to get smashed. We watched the first movie and decided that we'd bail on the second one, since we were both kind of creeped out by being at a drive-in with a dude. Besides, neither of us had heard of a movie called "The Birdcage", so there was no point in sticking around to see it, since it probably blew anyway. Just as we were about to leave, the movie started up, so we figured we'd give it five minutes to see if it was any good. Probably took about five seconds until we heard the first lisp and we were outta there.

It was a quality flick. Owen and Portman made the movie. I wouldnt recommend seeing it w/ a wife or girlfriend cause you wont trust them for at least 2 weeks.
