The Fredo game was not played at Chestnut Hill, but at Foxboro, MA, presumably at Schaeffer Stadium (the Patriots then-home). Thus, my guess is that the Fredo game was not considered an "away" game, but rather, a "neutral field" game (how "neutral" the field was may be debatable, but then again, Fredo was nowhere near as good a program back then as they are today).

By this analysis, Devine still won his first two road games, but his second road game win didn't come until the fifth game of the season. I think the AP article you saw was a reference to Weis winning the first two games of his coaching career, both of which happened to be road games. That alone makes it a difficult feat, since scheduling becomes a factor in whether a coach can accomplish this. Historically, ND has rarely played its first two games on the road, although now that they have made it clear that they want to open the season before the Michigan game, that may be happening more often in years when the Michigan game is a road game.

There's plenty of those, or at least, there were, back in my day.

True story: when I was an undergrad, Indiana was a 21 state back when 21 states weren't terribly common. There were a number of bars in South Bend. One of those bars, Corby's, had a policy of making sure that all of its patrons had ID's, but never actually checked the information on the ID's. Needless to say, Corby's was a pretty popular hangout for undergrads.

At the end of my sophomore year, Corby's was still going strong. Then I left for the summer, came back for my junior year, and when I got back, Corby's was no more. Seems that the owner was actually murdered during that summer.

Not often because ND has rarely had to deal with shitbag-bendover-take-it-in-the-ass AD's who would allow the schedule to come out like this. Hell, it wouldn't have even happend this year if they didn't rearange the Pitt game. But you're right, it's no big deal. But when a new coach at ND wins, the media will jump all over it and the fact that this hasn't happend since Rockne, the more they love it.
