Just getting into the Indie scene

Post by peter dragon »

and I like most of what I hear.. so far

The Arcade Fire - Funeral
absoutly love it! A instant Favorite..yet wasnt as impressed with Wolf Parade that Donovan suggested..

SufJan Stevens - Illinois
Great and kinda strange..Rythmic and I end up humming strange tunes..but overall one of my favorite "new albums"

Spoon - Give me Fiction
Very cool stuff a little harder than the first two, and more "rock" Almost bealtish? less sting (violins) instruments than the others in this list..

The Decemberists - Picaresque
nice I have really gotten into this album as well..

Iron & Wine - Have In the Reins and Our Endless Numbered Days
but havent listened to it yet..

As you can tell im horrible at writing critiques.. sorry..But what am I missing.. what other bands should I check out? any suggestions?
thanks
Bob

For the recent stuff, check out pitchfork's best of the past 5 years:

I didn't know Unwound was still around 'til I read that.

For stuff from the 90s or earlier, ask PSU or Moorese or King Crimson or MGO or Donovan.

Carbon Leaf. I just discoverd them and absolutly love their sound. Kinda Dave Matthews/Bare Naked Ladies type stuff but, in my opinion, much better. They also blend some Celtic to their sound. Very interesting and very, very good. Start with their latest release, "Indian Summer", and work backwards. Skip their live CD and get "Echo, Echo" after Indian Summer.

Also, I don't know if he can be considered "indie" anymore, but Ryan Adams is solid. His album, "Gold", is excellent. "Heartbreaker" is also a solid CD.

Unfortunately, the really good Wolf Parade, I can't find on the net. They have 2 EPs and a full length out, and what I have isn't any of those. I have noticed more and more reviews popping up about them though. There are definitely other bands I'd introduce you to before them anyway. One thing you should never do though is dismiss a band after one song, or even one album. So much of it can be so different that you wouldn't know you're listening to the same band, such as the case w/ Wolf Parade as they mix up vocalists from time to time, and cover spastic rock to gloomy theremin alt/pop rock. For starters I'd definitely check out Belle and Sebastian - Tigermilk. That'll have you humming tunes for weeks. Also try some Grandaddy...anything by them I'm convinced you'll like, but I'd go with Sumday (which I think is Grandaddy's best album song-for-song, however, they have better individual songs off Software Slump and Under The Western Freeway).
