Tigers fire Trammell

Post by Shoalzie »

From WXYT...press conference coming this afternoon.

The wheels came off after this looked like a promising season. Tram is still going to be looked upon as royalty in Detroit but he just wasn't a good manager.

Why is it that teams like Detroit, KC and Baltimore consistently field shitty teams and run through managers. Let's clip a GM every once and awhile.

I'm sure Phil Garner would agree with that.

The Tigers have had 3 GMs in the last decade or so...Dombrowski, Randy Smith and the other guy before Smith, his name escapes me.

You can scratch "reportedly", Shoalzie. Tiggers sign Leyland to a three-year deal.

Ex-Dodgers manager Jim Tracy "reportedly" the leading candidate
to take over in Pittsburgh. :P

other than straight up cash, i don't understand leyland signing with detroit. i don't see it being any better than his previous gig in denver: lack of support/brains from management and ownership.

i give him three years before he says "fuck this."

From hearing bits and pieces of his presser after he was hired, he sounds like he's not going to put up with any crap. Tram let the clubhouse get out hand towards the end of this season and guys like Magglio and Pudge popped off in the papers. Leyland is either going to run a tight ship with who is here now or he and Dombrowski will get rid of who isn't following the program. I think this team needs a disciplinarian. Tram was more of a friend than a manager...he doesn't have the abilities to be cut-throat to make decisions that might piss some of the players off. Leyland may have been out of the game for a while but look at what McKeon did with the Marlins and heck, Vermeil in the NFL with the Rams. The Tigers will shake up the roster a bit but I think the biggest move they had to make was get rid of Trammell and get a veteran manager in here.

^^^^^^Which is why I say that the salary-cap in the NHL is the best thing to happen to the Tigers. Now Illitch will have untold millions sitting around that was earmarked for the Wings. Spend on the Tigers, and they can contend sooner than later. Rumor is that the pitcher from the Marlins (Burnett, I think) is interested in coming to Detroit. He played under Dombrowski in Miami.

I keep hearing on the radio shows out of Detroit that Illitch will look to sell the Tigers soon.

The Tigers have some nice pieces to build around but this year's free agent pool isn't too deep. They need to add a starter or two, pick up some bullpen help and add a left handed bat. They have a couple young arms they want to bring up from the minors. Granderson may have finally won the centerfield job. They just need to figure out who is their full-time left fielder, will they keep Carlos Pena after his finish to the season and does Pudge want to stay here.

Leyland fills out his coaching staff with the exception of pitching coach...

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?sec ... id=2187618

Lots of ex-Pirates...Lamont, McClendon, Van Slyke, Belliard, Slaught...Larry Rothchild would supposedly their pick for pitching coach but he turned the Tigers down to stay in Chicago. Another name being tossed around is Orioles' pitching coach Ray Miller.

You've got arrogant hotheads in McClendon and Van Slump.

Good luck with that clubhouse, Tigerfan.
