I was watching TSN's season preview and they barely touched on Edmonton's salary cap room which got me thinking. Now stick with me here:
1) Lowe has said that Edmonton's cap will be 33-35millon this year.
2) Edmonton's current roster is 31 million.
3) This means that there is 2 to 4 millon that Edmonton could spend...
Ok I think that those points were fairly obvious, now here's the interesting part. The salary caps are based on year averages! IF the Oilers play half a season with the current roster, that means that the the 2 to 4 million that they don't spend could be added to the later half of the year. Meaning come trade deadline time, they would have a $35 to $39 millon dollar roster and their yearly average would only be $33 or $35 millon. This means that if we are still in it come Feburary, we could spend $4 to $8 million on any rental free agents (plus the salary that would go with the player(s) we trade). IF this happens, we rent-a-player for the later half of the year, try to make a cup run. Sure, over the off season they would sign somewhere else (we wouldn't have the cap room), which is fine since we have more young talent coming up next year.
Does anyone think that this could be an actual strategy?

Re: Salary cap...
You need at least $2-4 million in room to cover yourself in case of injuries.Joey Moss wrote:
