Advice sought...

As many of you know I do the radio for our local high school football where I live. Last year I got a message from someone on another board asking my advice about one of our locak programs he's involved in where kids are doing speed and coke before games. I told him the moral thing to do was to go the appropriate people and let them know. Well he did that. He sent me an e-mail the other day and informed me that two of the kids on one team I'm covering this week just entered rehab. Now, I ask you guys....is it appropriate for me to report this during the game when one of the kids who's a starter isn't playing (if in fact he doesn't play) or should I just keep my mouth shut and not say anything. I think it's a perfect time to let young kids know the evils and horrors of doing stupid shit like drugs........
what would you do?

sounds like a ready made libel lawsuit to me. maybe 88 would take your case, but libel suits are lose-lose to defendants. totally not worth it.

Lax, I agree with the posts above. Why brand a kid for life without knowing all the details. Many kids do the caffeine thing, and back in the day mini-whites sometimes got passed around (coaches looking the other way)....

Their parents are probably now aware and dealing with the problem. Probably would make their job easier without the pub.

When you get to announcing college or pro, the fans will demand to know where the players are----not H.S....

That said, PM me and let me know who they are.....Discretion is the better part of valor.........or at least which school.....

I doubt that doing radio play-by-play for a high school football team is a very high paying gig, but if you have any interest in keeping it, keep your mouth shut.

A cousin of mine became a meth addict and subsequently got treatment. Now he's upstanding, a CPA and working for a major firm. He got a second chance...

Let these kids have a second chance. I see your point about raising the issue, but it would be detrimental to the kids and their parents.

actually you should say something.
to the two kids,briefly,in private you should give them positive reinforcement, encourage them,let them know somebody "has their back"
at a time when they've prolly been brow beat and feel like losers tell them you're looking forward to seeing them back on the football field.
but by no means, under any circumstance, add to their public and private humiliation.

Depends on the circumstances. Obviously, if the kids' parents went to a reporter and asked that a story be done on their kids in order to prevent other kids from getting into drugs, there would be no problem. Or if a parent got up in front of the school board and proclaimed there's a drug problem with members of the football team, that would be fair game as well, from a reporting perspective. (In that case, the parent could still be sued in civil court for slander if he or she named individual kids).

In this case however, 88 is right. It is second-hand information. Without getting an OK from the family, or unless the coach makes a public statement about it (highly unlikely), I wouldn't bring it up.

Ok, from an ignorant point of view....what's the scarlet letter. Frisco I think it can benefit some people because of the message that can be sent, however I agree about the legal ramifications which is why I'm staying away from it.

Thankfully RICE being the fine institution they are allows their students to select books from a pool or selection of books. However, the reading of the Cliff's Notes was in reference to HS where the Scarlet Letter was required in JR English.

[getting on soapbox]This is part of the problem of schools in today's US. There are still required reading materials that they force feed down the throats of students. Kids might be more receptive to reading books that they are more interested in and therefore they might learn and retain more. Sure there is much to be learned from Dickens, Hawthorne, et al, but I think you can find those same lessons in more contemporary works too. Finally save me the line about letting the students choose what they want to study in math. There is a huge difference between math and english. [/stepping off of soapbox]

I see your point, but there is definitely something being taught to students with a text like The Scarlet Letter, regardless of how interested they are in it. I actually see a direct parallel between reading things you might not be interested in, and learning quantitative skills that you aren't interested in. Both teach a student to buckle down and perform academically, regardless of how much it tickles their fancy.
