question----

Post by Wolfman »

Who was the first QB to slide when it
was apparent that he would be tackled
and thus gain a bit of yardage and protect
to ball ???
Elway ??

I'd imagine that move goes back to the days of Sammy Baugh. As far as I can remember QBS have been doing that.

As for who, dunno. One of the geeks may answer this.

As for the rest of your statement ........ they slide to protect their own asses. As soon as their ass touches the ground, they are considered down, with a defensive player simply touching them. Now, if that defensive player actually puts a hit on the QB, then you will see more flags than you will on July 4th. The very last 2 things they are even considering is yardage and protecting the ball. If fact, that is zero consideration at all, if they are sliding. CYA, is the ONLY thing in their minds at that point.

Allow me to re-word your question:

The defensive player does not even have to touch em. Once the side happens the play is dead.

I believe that the slide basically started when they made the rule protecting the QB when he slides.
If he doesn't he's fair game. If he does slide he's protected.

i'm not gonna look it up....but, that does seem to be the pvssy rule.

QB gives herself UP with the Slide.

g0d forbid if you SPEAR her when she's down too.

He's right. When the QB slides he gains protection - they can't hit him at all - but he also can't get up and advance any further either.

I don’t have a link but I’ve seen it several times…Quarterback slides, is not touched, then jumps up and goes to the huddle.

Guess we should add that it is different if the QB slides head first.

I did find this…
"When a quarterback slides to the ground feet-first, he is, in effect, tackling himself. He is surrendering and you better not touch him. The ball is spotted where it was positioned when the quarterback first contacted the ground in his slide. The rule is meant to provide a form of protection to quarterbacks in the open field. If he goes head-first, however, that protection doesn't exist."
