Not sure about this. Most on this board prefer college football to the NFL, but I'm here to tell you, we're in the minority in that regard.Van wrote:Hmmm...
In any case the NFL is so machiavellian in its machinations that even if such things were true it's never going to prevent another NFL team from attmpting to catch a ride on that gravy train, if for no other reason than the boost in season ticket sales and overall fan interest.
On any given Sunday there's some flat out corpses manning the sidelines in the NFL and the allure of injecting Pete's notoriety, enthusiasm and charisma into some moribund franchise like the Saints or Lions would prove to be too tempting to ignore for many an NFL owner...
Very few college football teams have anything more than a regional fan following. Fans of the Saints and Lions are just as likely to view Pete as the failed ex-coach of the Jets and Pats as they are to view him as the guy who turned USC's program around.
Not to mention that most former college coaches have failed to make the jump successfully to the NFL. Jimmy Johnson is pretty much the last one to pull that off, and he did it with GM powers, and on the back of a trade (Herschel Walker) that would be impossible to pull off today with all of the salary cap implications. As you're well aware, his second tenure, with the Dolphins, was markedly less successful.
