ND-OSU

Post by Killian »

Bring it bitches.

I know, I know. This is the game that ND doesn't deserve to be in, and the huge rating that it will draw will be because of all the people tuning in to see another overrated ND team get waxed in a BCS bowl it doesn't deserve to be it.

Well, this isn't your Bobrone Davieham led Fighting Irish.

I'm up for a sig bet, as is Terry and Lax, I'm sure.

This place is too damn full of you useless, hairless nuts. Let's take roll:

88
Peter Dragon
buckeye_in_sc
Sky
Shawn Marrion
L45B
FLW Buckeye

Am I missing anyone? I feel like I am. If I did, check in. As it stands right now, you guys have a 7-3 advantage. This is going to be a long month.

See you fucks on January 2nd.

Thank God there aren't any of the loonies from NDNation or Bucknuts/O-Zone on these boards.

Awww, that wasn't the way you want to open this argument, is it?

Really though, unless it was for the NC, I couldn't think of a better game/matchup. I am excited to play you guys and while I think our D will guide us to a win, it will be a stellar game no matter what happens.

Just wanted to get something up here and sticky it. Just moved into a new office building so I don't know the traffic lanes yet and who will be walking by my computer. When I get that figured out, I'll post more.

Of course, just like this thread. Good natured fun.

That having been said, Ohio native Brady Quinn and his 6'5" receivers will light up your secondary.

He's from Dublin, OH. Not sure how close that is to Columbus. He was recruited by OSU, but it came down to UofM and ND because OSU already had Justin Zwick.

Dublin is a wealthy area 15 mins outside of Columbus, and yes, what a great pick that was---Lets get Justin Zwick, alienate all these other great recruits and then watch Zwick flounder on the sideline.

To be fair, Zwick was one of the top QB's in his class coming out of HS. Quinn didn't exactly look like a world beater until Charlie and Peter Vaas showed up. Switch the two, and you may have similar results.

Good point...and it is all from the over-hype we put on recruiting. Buckeye nation as well as Zwick really expected great things. It is unfortunate for him they didn't work out.

ND SUCKS.

Here's a little more intrigue for the game:
There are some interesting relationships that exist between the OSU football team and the Notre Dame football team. Buckeye linebacker A. J. Hawk has been dating none other than the sister of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, and OSU linebacker Anthony Schlegel has a long-standing relationship with one of the Irish assistant coaches.

"Their D-line coach is the guy who recruited me to the Air Force Academy and is one of my good friends and I love him," said Schlegel.

Wow, picking which team I'll pull for will make my head explode. I hate the BCS more than I hate either team so that's something.

Ohio State 28, Notre Dame 24

I might tune in and catch some of it but not on a full stomach.

Shoalz,

It should be easy for your bitter anti-bcs, no game matters but the Championship, self. You said yourself you don't care, you won't watch, and you certainly won't root for the Big10 team here.

True but I can't root for ND though. I suppose if I had to choose one, I'd say Go Irish just because of my plea for all Big Ten teams to lose and the OSU loss is still a fresh wound in my heart.

Man, you're all over the place with your sentiments! So you don't give a shit if Michigan wins or loses, since it's a meaningless "consolation" game, yet you're rooting for all the Big Ten teams to lose? How can you not care about the Michigan/NU game, but you care enough about all these other "meaningless" bowls that Michigan is not involved in? Pick a side...if you're not going to give a shit, then don't give a shit 100%.

In for a sig bet as well. And this ^^^^ is exactly what I'm thinking.

Throw in the fact that for much of that month, Weis won't be running a practice due to finals, which means he has all day during that time to game-plan. And while we haven't seen a defense like tOSU this year, we have an offense that's scary in terms of its explosiveness.

It'll be close, but I think we pull it off in the end.

Great game. Two smart coaches who are no starnger to big games. I think giving Weis 4 weeks to prepare is almost unfair b/c I saw what he did to USC w/ only two weeks.

I'll give you points for taking me to task on this. College football is too addictive to not have a take on some of these games...at least the ones involving Big Ten rivals. My bottom line still remains, the Rose Bowl is the only game that counts. I do want the Big Ten teams to lose no matter how I feel about the bowl games. I feel that way during the regular season too...it never changes.

I said awhile back he deserves a minimum of 2 more years. He's literally built programs from nothing at 2 other schools, so I'm still giving him the benefit of the doubt. Look at where he has gotten Louisville today. Keep in mind this IS MSU. Their standards just aren't that of an ND or a UofM, nor should they be. They will require more time.

Can't say I'm not a little worried about the ND offense.

At the same time, I have confidence in the OSU D. They can gameplan for anybody and anything. Miami's 3 headed monster in the Fiesta, KSU's fast ass QB the next year, OkSU's "vaunted" running game last year. They even held VY in check an entire game, outside of one final drive that shouldn't have mattered had the O been able to execute and a certain bastard TE been able to catch. (Whatever, Texas won they're better and i'm still bitter.)

The question is, how does ND's D matchup to the Buckeye offense? Did ND really face a mobile QB all year, Stanton? Was he it?

Should be a good game.

Random advantage for OSU: their players have been to Phoenix before, twice and have played in bowls every year. Should be less distractions for them (unless of course someone takes money or OSU won't let a player fly home for a funeral)

Technically, ND was in Phoenix last year as well. All be it for the Insight.com bowl.

I understand your thought that OSU can gameplan for anyone, but what do you gameplan for against ND. It wouldn't surprise me to see ND open in a 5 WR, no huddle set for the first drive, go ball controll and use screens the second, and then run the third. The best thing about Weis and his offense is that it's not a gimmick that you have to stop. He mixes up formations and play calls better than any offensive coach I've seen. That's why I think this will be such a good game.

As far as the ND defense is concerened, it has gotten better as the year has gone on. Victor Abiamiri has had a great second half of the season and is finally turning into the pass rusher that so many ND fans hoped for. Their LB's are fast and Minter likes to use Mayes (and to a lesser extent, Hoyte) on delayed blitzes. They struggle in pass coverage which is a reason Stanford was in the game so late. Their TE killed us. Our corners are above average, have good speed and don't mind to get physical. The biggest problem is the safeties. They like to come up and hit in run support, but they aren't that good defending the deep ball. Zibby loves to bite hard on play action, leaving the CB in one on one coverage. Sadly, that's one area that I hoped would have improved as the year went on, but it hasn't.

Yes, but did you game plan for Northwestern and Iowa in the same week? I know there is more time before the Fiesta, but the beauty is that if you do game plan for something, there's a good chance it won't even be used.

I'm actually more concerned about your tight end. I would assume that ND would run a 2 deep zone - type defense to try and negate Ginn and Holmes's speed advantage. This would leave the linebackers in one-on-one coverage against the tight end, and they struggle in pass coverage. Many ND fans have been upset with Rick Minter and consider this game to be a big test, seeing as how he has over 1 month to prepare for this offense.

Ohh, don't worry about that, Hamby is supposed to be back and he has shown he can't catch a ball (multiple times this season). Plus, we only use our TE's for 5 and out's.

But really, I look at the way Tressel prepared for Miami and really most games: our defense usually looks soft early and lets up a score. After that, they crack down and adapt their strategy for what the offense is bringing. Of course, I have always thought an opposing coach should have two strategies, one for the first half and then one for the second half (to catch OSU off guard).

I don't worry too much about OSU's D against multiple threats once they get an idea of the gameplan. However, if you mix it up it would require quick recogonition by our coordinators.

That's why I'm looking forward to this game so much. I think it's going to be a great test for both coaches. I've been impressed with JT and his ability to shut down offenses. I think Miami fell into the trap of "we'll out athlete them", and it killed them. Coker and Chudzinski (sp?) really fucked that up. But taking McGahee out of the game (not injury wise) was damn impressive.

Question because I haven't seen OSU play as much as others, how far off the ball do your CB's typically line up?

Usually pretty soft, even on 3rd and short. We have a tendency to keep everything underneath to prevent the "big" play. However, that allows teams to slowly 8,9, and 10 yard gain us down the field. Keeps our D on the field and our O on the sideline.

We don't have a lot of pics this year because we don't jump the play very often (maybe 8 or 9 for the season). Look at the Minnesota stats. Caupito isn't a great Q but we focused on the run and played our DB's soft. They rolled up 500+ yards.

However our D gets better as the game goes along. Hopefully Carpenter comes back but it doesn't look like he can even run until the 28th or something like that. If ND doesn't start out strong and our O gets things going, you may be playing catch up all game.

The reason I ask is because in the Purdue and BYU games, the corners played off and Quinn would take a one step drop and fire it to Samardzija or Stovall and let them pick up 7-10 yards every time.
