I wouldn't exactly call what Notre Dame does as travelling. There are a number of catholics in almost every major metro area that follow Notre Dame. That isn't a knock they have built a fan base and use it properly.
While there are a huge number of subway alumni, most of the fans that travel to games are the ones who can afford it, and they are typically alumni. The subway alumni may boost numbers, but ND fans always travel well.
You're right in that the alumni, generally speaking, are more affluent than the subway alumni. Having said that, however, it's important to note that ND's alumni base is tiny compared to most D1A schools (roughly 150,000 living alumni, calculated on the basis of approximately 3,000 graduates per year from undergraduate and graduate schools and average post-graduation life expectancy of about 50 years). Even though I'm an alumnus, I've always appreciated the impact the subway alumni have had on our program -- without them, we would not be the national player that we are.

Of course, many of the bowl games are played in the South, and generally speaking, there are fewer Catholics in the South than in other regions of the country, although there are more Catholics per capita in large metropolitan Southern areas than there are in the more rural areas of the South.

It's fine with me that Michigan fans don't show up. However, your "we're too cool to go to non-BCS bowls" attitude only helps Iowa out. Better get used to Iowa being selected for a better bowl than Michigan anytime we have similar records, regardless of who wins head-to-head. Why exactly would someone from Michigan NOT want to go to San Antonio? It's fucking cold here in the Midwest. It's either go down to San Antonio where it's relatively warm or stay in the freezing cold and dodge bullets in Detroit.

Pretty much nails it. If they're in future competition with another team for a BCS bowl, the BCSers are going to remember this. The claim that they WILL travel for a bigger bowl game may be true, but why take a risk, when you can go with another team whose fans you KNOW will show up.

I'm sure future bowl committees will research Alamo Bowl ticket sales when deciding whether to take UM for a bcs game :meds: .

Iowa needs to concentrate on staying bowl eligible year in and out and UM will focus on selling out bcs allotements.

Keep on thinking Iowa's got it over UM as far as fanbase, keep painting lockerrooms pink, and keep getting punked by our 4th team rb in your crib vs. your future nfl'ers. Enjoy Tampa bruz, I'm of to Motown tonight to spend a few days ducking hot lead.

Can we all say a prayer for Steve? Let's just hope he comes out alive. Remember, don't stop at stoplights or stop signs and you should be fine. And don't forget to donate to the University of Michigan Ref Paying Fund. Your end of the year fees are due.

i guess we'll have to worry about that blue moon when it comes around again. after 100 years or so of football and yr line of shit is, "we get the better lower-tier bowl bid if we have similar records"?

Jonnieboy,
Worry not for me. I lived many a year in and around motown. Like Iowa being superior to UM, much of the Murder Capital shit is mythical. Detroit is cool, I wouldn't expect you to understand it.

Have a great Holiday all, and GO BLUE!!

it must be an interesting perspective to watch yr team patch together a few good seasons and assume yr turning some sort of corner. next time michigan's up for a bcs bid against iowa i guarantee um will get the bid. either we're fairweather or we're not, and if we are, there'll be 400,000 alumni lined up for tickets. iowa?

Unfortunately for MichiganFan, they will not have the last laugh. Soon, they will not even be the best team in southeast Michigan! That's right! Eastern's program is on the rise! First the MAC, then the NC, then...then the world! BWAHAHAHAHAHAAA!

We brought over 50,000 to the Orange Bowl 3 years ago. Next time we go to Pasadena, we'll have at least that many.

Ya never know. They might schedule a home-and-home with UCLA.
