Garland for 3 yrs seems like a bargain
much smarter move than millwood for 5 yrs. I like Millwood but no way he is still pitching in 5 years.
Garland has been a .500 or worse pitcher up until this year. He'll be able to be a free agent at 29 after three more seasons to further prove himself. He benefits greatly from this but the Sox do also because he won't have a huge contract to move if they want to trade him to get a closer, shortstop or centerfielder at some point. If Brandon McCarthy can pitch well enough to get into the rotation full-time, you could see Garland or Garcia get moved for other key pieces. The Sox are already a complete team now with the additions of Thome and Vazquez...they still aren't as strong up the middle as they should be. This move further shows how good Kenny Williams has become as a GM. It's a win-win for the Sox.
