Re: It will be an issue until black writers stop talking...
What is it with black writers with the last name smith? Are they required to make everything racial?
I mean the guy tries to come up w/ some valid points to say that the NFL ownership arent flat our racists, but they never seem to let up. They got what they wanted in that 12 out of 25 coaching interviews went to minorities, but the owners decided on other guys since it is THEIR COMPANY. Its a big step for black coaches to get interviews but it seems like some people want everything to change in a year. I am a little surprised that Carthon or Cottrell didnt get a sniff, but there is always next year.

On a serious note, with all of the coaching changes this season, I would like to see how many minority coaches have been elevated in Asst Coaching positions before offering a real take on the whole issue.

Ted Cottrell has been out for interviews for a LONG time now...why isn't he clicking with anyone?Cicero wrote:I am a little surprised that Carthon or Cottrell didnt get a sniff, but there is always next year.
you say "token interview"...i say....this has been his ? 4th year or so, of said interviews.
i guess Ted's not stepping up his Game...or, he's just an OLD SCHOOL Football Coach that doesn't WANT to PLAY the GAME Anymore.
as for Carthon....

Mo' Carthon was...at best....helter~skelter with his play-calling for the Browns this year.
he wouldn't give Dilfer any Rythuuuum...and he surely gave NONE to Charlie Frye. (witness Frye's 9-6 beatdown of the Raiduh's)...sorry.
He "committed" to NOTHING.
his 1st season as an OC...sucked donkey ballz.
Now, TAJT would like him to be his RAIDUH's HC.

A black coach will win a ring eventually...I hate how something like this needs to be brought to light. No one really thinks about this stuff unless someone brings it up. I don't think the 1-9 stat should deter anyone from hiring a black coach and considering you've got both Lewis and Smith in their first couple of seasons with their teams, who's to say they won't continue to make the playoffs and eventually end up in a Super Bowl?

Exactly my point. It will always be an issue as long as the media and black voices keep bringing it up. In 5 years, if things havent changed than bitch away. But to do it every season when progress is obviously being made makes their case moot.

By that half of those interviewed for HC jobs were black and that more and more OC and DC jobs are going to qualified black men those setting them up to be HC's in the future. Oh wait, this is you.....

Only b/c the NFL requires organzations to interview minority canidates. Was it Detroit that went under fire for hiring Mariucci before they interviewed a black canidate? That is bullshit- if I am running a team and I know who I want- I shouldn't be forced to interview people just because of their skin color.Cicero wrote:

Carthon was solid in Dallas and in all fairness the Brownies had NADA for offense. HOWEVER. Ruben Drones still had a solid year and Charlie Frye is a rookie. Carthon did ok with what he had. No Winslow,no Edwards for most of the year Trent Dilfer is WELL past his prime(granted in his prime he was well past his prime), and the defense had no identity. while I doubt Carthon will get any job let alone the Raider job, he is worthy of consideration for a coach.
Besides from what I've been reading Ken Whisenhunt has emerged as the top choice.

Personally, I think before any major newspaper hires one more white sports reporter, they should bring in at least one minority candidate. Better yet, they should put a freeze on hiring any white sports reporters, until the % representation of black reporters equals the corresponding sport they cover.

Like any of them ever had a real chance. The NFL gets premium access to publicly funded stadiums in order to make their profit. They have deals with 3 of the 4 major networks to use public airwaves to transmit their product. The least they can do is provide some semblance of equal opportunity in their hiring practices.mvscal wrote:BSmack wrote: The alternative is free competion.![]()

No, the least they can do is hire whoever they feel is the candidate that is most likely to succeed, and give their fans who pay the bills the best opportunity to see a winning team.BSmack wrote:The least they can do is provide some semblance of equal opportunity in their hiring practices.
Hiring a less-qualified applicant just because of ethnicity undermines the whole point of equality.
Hire the best freaking coach, for goodness' sake. Black white or purple, it doesn't matter -- I just want to see my team win.

You mean the taxpayers who may or may not be fans. Right?
Almost every coach in the NFL is a former NFL player. So why don't we see more blacks coaching? Why don't we see more black GMs? The logic just doesn't hold that there are more qualified white coaching and management candidates than black candidates.Hiring a less-qualified applicant just because of ethnicity undermines the whole point of equality.

Wha??!??! Let me explain something to you. More blacks play in the NFL than whites. Soooo, when all these un-athletic white guys dont make the league or get cut after a couple of years, they diven into coaching. Thus they build their resume and make a name for themsleves. Plus, it seems more white guys want to get into coaching. So, the logic is justified that there are more qualified white candidates than blacks. Same goes for the NBA. Except its worse.

Wassup Pickle? You saying that the knee grow is just too damn athletic to be able to build a coaching resume?Cicero wrote:Wha??!??! Let me explain something to you. The sidelines of every NFL game are littlered with lower level assistant coaches and coordinators who are black. The question is, why don't these guys get the big jobs yet? Thus they build their resume and make a name for themsleves. Plus, it seems more white guys want to get into coaching. So, the logic is justified that there are more qualified white candidates than blacks. Same goes for the NBA. Except its worse.

Nice job Mr. Campanis.mvscal wrote:Because the vast majority of them are stupid monkeys who can run and jump very well, but are barely capable of tying their own shoes let alone coach an NFL team in any capacity.

Most players, black or white, were lower teir players. Of the 1800 players currently in the NFL, 1% will have a sniff at the Hall of Fame. And of that 1%, only half of them will make the Hall. Unless your argument is that most lower tier players are white and that better players are not good coaches, I'm not sure where you are going with this line of reasoning. The qualities that make for great athletes are not necessarily the same as the qualities that make for a great coach.
Sure many coaches are former NFL players, but they were almost all lower tier players. As far as I know, Ditka is the only Hall of Fame player to win a championship as a coach.
BTW: For starters, Forrest Gregg and Raymond Berry also coached teams to the Super Bowl. Of course they were white and could not have been great players, so their election to the HoF was probably a mistake.

Real solid anyalisis. You do realize Ditka and Berry coached against each other in SB XX?mvscal wrote:That is exactly the point. A lower tier player who had to compensate for his relative lack of athleticism with meticulous preparation and study is more likely to be better prepared for a career in coaching than a superstar athlete would. Not to mention that the superstar player would only take up coaching if he enjoyed it as a hobby.
So that makes Hall of Famers 1-2 in championship games. Not exactly the stuff of legend as they were as players.
In other words, someone was bound to lose.
There may have been other HoFers. I know Jim Thorpe coached for a period of time. Sammy Baugh as well. But the talent pool of Hall of Famers is pretty damn small.
Furthermore, there are plenty of black scrub players on NFL rosters. Show me that there are more white scrubs than black and you "might" have an argument.

Let's make this real simple and quick for the tards.mvscal wrote:And some of them such as Tony Dungy and Herm Edwards are decent coaches.BSmack wrote:Furthermore, there are plenty of black scrub players on NFL rosters.
You're still ducking the bottom line here and that is the fact that great athletes don't necessarily make great coaches, so the argument that most players are black is totally irrelevant.
Equal % of scrub players from both races should equal the same % of head coaches. Yet it does not.
