Renteria dealt to the Braves
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2252297

Towards the bottom, it mentions the Sox may turn around trade Marte to Tampa Bay for Julio Lugo.

$8 million per season for Rogers?

The Jays signing Burnett for $11 million per season is looking like a steal now.

The Red Sox just keep getting stronger and stronger. If they get Glaus, you can PUT IT ON THE BOARD, YES!
I'm not sure the Pad's could afford trevor and Loretta. I'm sure they have plans to replace mark somehow. :P

Why are they trying to pick up Kenny Rogers? They've already got Robertson and Maroth...do they want to lead the league in soft-throwing lefties? Detroit cameramen, be on the look out... :meds:
David Wells is still on the trading block. :P

The Jays signed Burnett on potential but at least Rogers has the resume and he's got a record above .500 unlike Burnett. Aside from the cameraman incident, he's been a solid pitcher and good with the glove. From a Tigers' standpoint, Rogers is an upgrade from Jason Johnson...that's not saying much though. If he can keep out of trouble and win a dozen games for each of the two years, it's decent investment. He's not an $8 million player and I would've preferred them to go after Millwood or Morris but he's a safe pickup considering his track record. I'm hoping the Tigers turnaround and package Maroth or Robertson in a deal to get another starter. They are also docking on Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya to help anchor the rotation with Bonderman for the next several years. Rogers is more of a stop-gap option...I don't think they were looking to make any longterm investments on a pitcher unless they're worth it. Plus with Leyland being an older guy, it's probably wiser to go with veterans guys like Rogers and Todd Jones.

The Burnett contract guarantees every FA pitcher will get a crazy contract this year. Matty Mo will go to the Giants for 3yr/24mil despite being worth half that.

$8 million per season for a guy who's already turned 41 years of age is overpaying.
$11 million per season for a guy who has nasty stuff and who is just now coming into his prime, isn't overpaying when you base those numbers on what others of comparible stats are making..
Besides you really can't count the number of wins Burnett has when you consider there are a number of things outside of his control which do factor into whether or not he would end up with a win during the game.

Tejada would be a perfect fit.
Then again, I said the same thing about Rent.

Rent struggled, but he'll be alright. Could it be the Boston press?

Who knows? All I know is when you get paid, you'd better perform.
Miggie. Sign a 4 year deal.

Hitting 3rd ahead of Papi- Damn. About 5 guys on my list to hit ahead of that guy and Miggie's one of 'em.

Facing Manny in a O's uniform 21 games a season kinda sucks tho'

(side note)
Boston better address their bullpen issue.

Chowd, Old Friend..

This off season is looking alright.. but more than bullpen.. there are questions at 1st, SS, CF, LF, Closer.

As of Dec 10, 2005

Catcher - Varitek
-backup Kelly Shopeck

1B- Youkilis??
Roberto Petagine - could be his time to shine!!

2B- Mark Loretta
Loretta, who has a .301 batting average over 11 Major League seasons, had his best season with the Padres in 2004, when he batted .335 with 47 doubles, 16 homers, 76 RBIs and 108 runs scored.
Second baseman Mark Loretta committed just six errors in 105 games in 2005

SS-???
Tejada (doubtful- but would be nice and an excellent trade for Manny)
Julio-Lugo?
Alex Gonzalez??

Alex Cora- decent with the glove..not much with the stick and saves the team $$$

(I'd be very happy with Tejada. Marginally happy with Lugo and ? with Gonzalez) but all would be an improvement over the 2005 Rent a Wreck

3B - Lowell (may switch to 1st) with Youkilis going to 3rd.
Marte may be on 3rd in the second half (if he is not raded for a SS)

RF- Trot

CF- ?? Damon ??

LF- ?? Manny??

DH- Big Papi

Rotation

Schilling
Beckett
Clement
Arroyo
Wakefield

??Wade Miller may prove to be a STUD now that he has rehabbed from surgery

Bullpen

Bradford
Mota
Hansen
DelCarmen
Timlin
Papelbon- (may be a starter)
DiNardo
Mantei (I think we still have him)

Closer (possibilities)
DelCarmen_??
Timlin
Foulke- if healthy and over the divorce, he is the man! If not, Timlin and DelCarmen should be given a chance...OR HANSEN

It's unknown what we can get for David Wells... but should be decent.

Mets sign Julio Franco to a 2-year deal to back up Delgado at 1B.

A two year deal for Franco?!? How old is he, anyway, 206?
Ask him who George W is, and he'll probably say "Washington".

(Insert your own age-related joke here). :P

Didn't really need it's own thread so I threw it in here...

'Big Hurt' signs with Oakland...

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2305916

Decent move if he doesn't get hurt. If he does get hurt, they don't owe him a ton of money and if he does stay healthy and produces, I'm sure they'd be happy to pay the incentives. It won't cost them more than a few million in that case so it can be a great move for the A's. With Durazo's career pretty much ended with injuries, Thomas can move in become the new DH. The A's should be interesting to follow with the young rotation, the development of Huston Street as the closer and the additions of Bradley and Thomas. The Angels didn't do anything improve themselves and the Mariners and Rangers have made some solid moves. The AL West should be interesting to watch...by no means is there a clear-cut favorite right now.
