Look for a major announcement coming out of Bloomington very soon, possibly as early as tomorrow.

Again, I can't wipe the smile off my face!!!!!

I hope there's something more than just on the court performance behind this one. Indiana is a tourney team and Davis should be allowed to finish out this year.

The first part is not a given by any means.

The second part will happen. And then...

me= :D :D :D :D :D

FWIW, Davis will be taking a page from ol Criminal Quin's playbook.

Alford will take the job

He's the only one who will be able to take reigns and not be criticized every night(even in offseason)

He is one of the Generals Kids, i think he gets a fair shake at IU!

There's a lot of secrecy, spinning and back-tracking going on with the incompotent IU admin. right now, but I can say with 100% certainty that Mike Davis will not be coaching IU next year. This "flu" story has more holes than Swiss cheese in it and the sources of my confirmation are about as rock solid as it gets. I'm beyond happy and feel such a sense of relief that this nightmare is almost over. I've been worried all along that Davis would do just enough to be retained.

As for this crap:
Alford will take the job

He's the only one who will be able to take reigns and not be criticized every night(even in offseason)
I don't even feel like getting into it right now, but I'll say two things.

1- There are TONS of people, myself included, that want no part of Alford as coach.

2- It's total crap to say he's the only one that can get a fair shake and shows how the media has distorted their portrayal of IU fans. Davis got MORE than a fair shake, as except for the small 2% of Knight loonies that hated Davis from day 1, Mike had total support until the end of his third year when he threw his team under the bus in the Pitt postgame press conference. The questions started popping up then and a 14-15 season was simply gasoline on the fire. I don't get the notion as to why IU fans are supposed to put up with sloppy, undisciplined and 60% winning basketball simply because the new coach doesn't curse out reporters.

Rick Majerus is the perfect choice.

Though you might wanna sew about 3 of Bobby Knight's old red sweaters together to make one for him.

If IU offers Alford, I find it hard to believe Steve would say no considering Brunner and Horner are graduating. But I am not so certain they will offer him. I would bet if you polled all IU fans, Alford would be the #1 choice. I could be wrong, but that's my guess. If he leaves, whatever. If he stays, whatever. I'm really kind of neutral on this. I think he's improved the last couple of years as a coach, but he has shown no ability to recruit and that is very frustrating. Dude knows basketball as well as anyone, that's for sure. The only reason I'd like to see him go to IU is because I'm really curious how he'd do at another school. Just like I want to see Dan McCarney leave ISU and go somewhere that it is possible to win at because I'm curious just how much success he'd have.

IndyF (or Skull I guess since he racked it)- WTF are you talking about???

Jon- As usual, you're wrong. I don't think Alford would crack the top 5 for coaching choices. It's been a debate for years now on the IU boards and the VAST majority, again myself included, want no part of Alford. In 2001 he'd have had 99% of people wanting him, but his time at Iowa and his handling of the Pierce situation have most folks looking other directions.

Mook- THE guy everyone wants is someone we won't/can't get, Thad Matta. After that it gets muddled as tons of names are being tossed about. The guys most discussed are:

Rick Majerus (who I want no part of, health risk too great)
Jay Wright
Bruce Pearl (who I want no part of)
Rick Barnes
Billy Gillespie
Paul Hewitt (who was at top of most lists until GT struggled this year)
Tom Crean
Mike Montgomery
Karl Hobbs
Barry Collier
Al Skinner

Barry Collier? for real?

I don't see Wright leaving Philly; he's a Philly guy. but, ya never know.

I think Barnes would be a great choice but i don't see anyone outspending UT at this juncture--since they are going to turn the Big XII into the equivilent of the Cold War arms race.

Shine,

BK threw his players under the bus all the time and he was loved, still is by many. We've discussed this ad nauseum. Public embarrassment of his players was his style.

Frisco, BK and MD should not really be compared or discussed in the same conversation excluding one's replacment of the other. Knight is a fablous coach and a better man.

I'll take a BK over Lute Olson, Bobby Bowden, Larry Coker, Eddie Sutton, Jimmy Johnson, John Thompson, etc.... any day.

I didn't say anything about whether they respected him or not. I just said he threw them under the bus.

We live in a different (pussified) era now where coaches (sans your K, Pitino, and a few others) can't do that anymore as they are crucified. IU is the perfect example. IU Fan didn't mind when BK threw his players under the bus. Many GayFan didn't mind when Spurrier did it either.

Now...not so PC.

Once again...I was not saying MD is the equivalent of BK. I just posed the question as to why IU Fan has a problem with their coach throwing the players under the bus when their holy grail of coaches did it all the time.

Personally, I don't like it no matter who the coach is. My last example of Spurrier is the same as BK. I hate it when coaches do that. Embarrass the kid in practice. Not in the media. I don't give a fuck who you are.

Mike Davis said today on his Big-10 teleconference that Indiana needs a coach that is a former player at IU so the fans can embrace him. Sounds like he knows he's gone. He also said his players deserve more than what the fans are giving them. Ouch! A lot of people here in Iowa think that Alford will end up at IU next season. I know, Shine, you don't want him, but what do you think IU will do? I know a lot of IU fans would like Bruce Pearl or Thad Matta, but I don't see either of that especially Matta. And it seems like Pearl really likes Tennessee. Plus, you don't want him. He's crooked. The guy is a phony, he's a fuckign snitch. You don't want a snitch. He is my least favorite former Iowa assistant coach of all-time. I'm glad he no longer coaches here. He is a good coach but he really seems like the type of guy that will eventually bring NCAA violations to the school he coaches. And Matta's not leaving Ohio State, not with the program he is building there.

All I know is this could get very interesting in the coming months for Indiana, and possibly Iowa. Everyone here thinks that IF Alford is offered the job, he will NOT turn it down.

IndyF- Since you claim BK did it "all the time", I'd like to see just 2 examples of when Knight did this, throwing players under the bus publically. Only an idiot would deny BK is without warts, so since he has plenty there's no need to make shit up about him.

L45B- I've been hearing the same thing for a long time now, and I'm just hopeful none of it leads to sanctions.

Jon- Alford won't be the coach at IU if for no other reason than politics. Too many of the BOT are still there who ousted Knight and they feel SA is too tied to Knight. I'm hopeful that proves true, I want no part of Alford.

Again, Matta is THE top choice but everyone is realistic that he isn't an option. Pearl gets a lot of run but I don't think he'd come, which is good because I don't want him. Too much of an "ick" factor with him. My personal top 3 right now are:

Mike Montgomery
Karl Hobbs
Billy Gillespie

KC- Collier gets mention because of his time at Butler. Many feel Nebraska was a no win situation and Collier is better than that.

I've heard from decent sources that AAU teammates Jeffrey Newton and A.J. Moye were bought and paid for, and Davis instigated it. Allegedly.

OK, I don't care when it happens and it doesn't even matter that it is Indiana, I just want Mike Davis out of there. I am so sick of his whining. He hasn't gotten the job done and he takes every opportunity he can to blame someone else.

The fans, the media and the players have all failed to support him properly....I mean damn, this guy has the toughest gig going right now.

From the O-zone:
While watching one of Indiana's two losses last week, their loss the week before to UConn came up. It was mentioned that Mike Davis said that "I knew we were finished" when Marco Killingsworth picked up his second foul in the first half. Way to stick with your team, Mike. Killingsworth picked up the foul with 6:43 left in the first half, with Indiana leading 31-23. UConn subsequently went on an 8-0 run to tie the game. The Huskies then continued to build their lead and eventually won 88-80. Keep Mike's comments in mind, please.

Then this past week, Mike Davis missed the Hoosiers' game against Iowa due to "flu-like" symptoms. Apparently the criticism from the fans has worn down his immune system. And if you were to ask Mike, it's also wearing on his players. He says fans wearing black in protest has gotten his team down, because his players pick up on things like that.

Mike, if the players can pick up on fans wearing black, do you think they can also pick up on a coach who "knows it's over" with 6:43 to go in the first half with an eight point lead? Stop blaming the fans for poor play. You don't see them blaming you for stale popcorn.

Sorry, but I'm not scouring the internet for two-plus hours trying to find post-game interview transcripts from 5-10-15-20 years ago. Spurrier did it. Knight did it. I'm sure there's interviews and such out there, but I'm not about to spend half a day looking for them. I'm not making the shit up. I've seen plenty of it on TV in post-game interviews with Knight where he would call out certain players for not doing their job. While maybe true, I don't think that belongs in the media. Practice? Yeah...not the media.

This is just this year...

After losing to San Francisco

"The difference in this game tonight was really apparent to us," said Knight, who was denied in his bid for career win No. 860. "USF came to win a basketball game and we came to play a basketball game. That was a huge difference."

...

After losing to Texas

"They're a very good basketball team," Texas Tech coach Bob Knight said. "We're not a very good basketball team."

...

Granted, BK is much more subdued these days, but that second quote...well, as a player of his, I'd feel like he just pantsed me in front of a group of cheerleaders right after I got out of the pool. While at IU, he was much more pressured to win. I just don't have the resources or time to try to find newspaper clippings and videos after every IU loss under his belt where he lost it.

Maybe it comes from years of exposure to Lou Holtz, but I don't see that the same way you do. That was Lou Holtz' standard line when he was at ND, even during the national championship year.

I remember him trotting out some line like that before a home game against SMU, which was one or two years removed from the death penalty.

From those two quotes, I agree. He didn't say so and so failed us or so and so let us down tonight, he said WE suck or WE just came to play tonight.

I think there is a pronounced difference between what he says and what MDavis said.

Sorry IndyF, but I think you're WAY off on this one. What you posted from BK (besides not being at IU :P ) is typical coach speak. I'm not sure how I can illustrate that other than to contrast your posted quotes with the following two, to see if you can tell the difference between talking about your teams shortcomings in coach speak and tossing your team under the bus and outing locker room talk.
Texas A&M coach Billy Gillespie wrote:We have to play better transition defense, we can't play the way we did tonight. I don't think we are Big 12 ready right now...

We let them catch the ball to easily. I don't want to take anything away from them, they played hard and have a good attack, but we didn't do well enough on defense. We have to make it harder on them, but I didn't think we would be great at that right now.
Mike Davis wrote:The thing I really like about Pitt's team is they're playing the way Ben is coaching and my guys don't play that way. I told them after the game, this is the most selfish team I've been around from the standpoint of not executing what you try to teach them from day one.

This team is a team that understands how to play and they play the way they're coached. My team hasn't done that in a long time.

Note the huge difference between Knight and Gillespie saying WE as in the entire team, and Davis deflecting blame as in I'M not the problem my team is.

One more from your guy Gillespie. (who I really like btw, wouldn't mind seeing him in B-town)
They showed us how to execute. Both teams played extremely hard, we just couldn't run our offense. That was the difference. Everybody was shooting shots in a hurry. We were standing around with the ball too much. We weren't as strong as we needed to be. We dug ourselves too deep a hole. We dug it because we couldn't run our offense. The story of the game was that they just physically whipped us.

Like I said, I don't have (readily available) access to all of BK's post-game comments from many years ago. I do know what I've heard on TV come out of his mouth. I don't need to convince you he's done the same shit as MD. I know he has. And it is wrong.
