At War With The Mystics

Got my hands on the new Flaming Lips. PM for a link.

So far it's doing nothing for me. I'll give it a few listens and hope it's a grower.

For a moment, I thought I had clicked on a WNBA thread. :P

first listen...

Its like they took the song "All We Have is Now" off Yoshimi and spun it into an album. I guess I'll have to listen a bunch to "get" what they were trying to do. As for now it ain't grabbing me. Sheeyat. It better.

that pompeii song is straight up prog. vocals and organ sound umma gumma with geezer butler on bass.

With the exception of the first two tracks, I'm digging it.

I've listened to it four times now and I still don't know what to think. There's an article on IGN where Wayne explains what the songs are about, but this record still seems to be a total mess.

All I can say is, I'm very disappointed.

To say one is disappointed means that you had some expectation before listening. I'm just curious as to what that expectation was.

I guess I'd say the album is pleasant to listen to, but not a gigantic leap forward from Yoshimi by any stretch. It's as if they had some riffs left over from Yoshimi that didn't make that album that they decided to flesh out this time around. Which, from my standpoint is enough to make me glad I have it in my collection as Yoshimi is one of my favorite albums ever. My rule of thumb is that if you can't do something new that doesn't suck, at least do something old that didn't suck.

So I'd give it a 3 out of 5.

Killing me over here.

Newsflash -- FL based an entire career on one freaking riff. If they had "some left over," I'm thinking they could have written more than one song with 50 different titles.

You all have sex with men, except any female FL fans, who of course have sex with animals.

I've enjoyed all of their previous records, so I guess you can say I expected the same from this one. I wasn't worried about whether they'd try something new, or keep doing what worked for them. I just wanted something good. And this record doesn't deliver.

I'll still buy it though. I hope you do too.

I'll be waiting for the DVD.

I always gotta give props to the Lips for pushing ahead of the RIAA's technological curve.
